Ionatron Receives Small Business Technology Transfer Contract.

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Ionatron, Inc., (Nasdaq: IOTN) a Laser Guided Energy (LGE(TM)) company developing next generation Directed Energy Weapons, today announced that it has received a Phase I Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Contract from the Army Research Office for development of a Light Filament Sensor.

This contract is expected to be completed in six months for a fixed price of $99,686.00. Successful completion of Phase I may lead to a Phase II contract for development of a prototype system. Ionatron is teamed with Professor M. Bonner Denton of the University of Arizona for this effort. Commenting on the contract award, Thomas Dearmin, President and CEO of Ionatron,said, "Ionatron continues to pursue other applications of our core Laser Guided Energy technology. We believe this contract is further indication that multiple missions exist for the advanced lasers and power supplies we develop. We expect that development of this application may result in a new remote sensor capable of detecting remote targets that may be toxic or contain toxic residue. Since this type of laser will be part of our Laser Guided Energy systems, we expect to have a true sensor/weapon capability that will provide our customers with enhanced, multi-mission systems. Additionally, as an STTR contract, this technology is required to have dual use application. As a result, it may also be available as a commercial product for civilian security applications."

About Light Filament Sensors

The formation and use of optical filaments resulting from high power, ultra-short laser pulses propagating within the atmosphere is an active area of research for military and commercial applications. Optical filaments are highly intense and non-diffracting self-guided beamlets that form within ultra-short pulsed laser beams. Much of the early research in the application of optical filaments has been centered on remote sensing applications. The intense optical filaments can be used to ionize molecules and atoms thus producing related emissions and they can simultaneously generate a very broad and continuous optical spectrum (referred to as white light or continuum generation). The resulting spectral continuum can be used to measure absorption and scattering losses within the atmosphere at long ranges while the receiver remains near the laser source. Importantly, the range at which the filament formation and continuum generation occurs within the atmosphere can be controlled electronically. Therefore, an electronically adjustable and long range spectroscopic tool that can both ionize and probe various atomic and molecular species along with measuring particle absorption and scattering can be developed using optical filamentation.
