Investing in your future. (Dear Reader).

Although the economists are predicting a recession, it still is important to invest in your future. This issue of AMT offers a number of ways to help with your commitment to your career.

Music teaching is a multi-faceted profession. At any given time, you may function as a business person, mentor, career coach or guidance counselor. With this in mind, we've assembled this issue to reflect these many roles.

The feature stories address several nonmusical aspects of teaching: zoning issues; the public's perception of music teachers and what each person can do to change that perception; the potential for malpractice lawsuits against music teachers; the supply and demand issue for performers; and finally how practice can play a role in a performer's job search. I think these articles will prove to be informative and intriguing.

Also, you'll find, beginning on page 30, initial information regarding the 2002 MTNA National Conference. The Conference is an excellent way to stay up-to-date on the latest in the music-teaching profession and the music industry. I personally invite you to "Get the Royal Treatment" here in Cincinnati--the "Queen City." The Conference Committee, chaired by Gail Berenson, NCTM, has selected a number of sessions sure to inspire all teachers.

In addition, I am happy to announce that MTNA has a new insurance program for the membership. Among the offerings are professional liability, general liability, vision and dental coverages, as well as an array of other financial services. I'm delighted that MTNA can assist its members with this important aspect of professional responsibility. Details about the program can be found in National Association News on page 41.

AMT also has invested in its future. I am pleased to announce that Kathleen Rountree, a former MTNA vice president and current dean of the University of Northern Colorado's College of Performing and Visual Arts, has been appointed chair of the AMT Editorial Committee. As such, she will lead in designing AMT's editorial content during this biennium. For a more in-depth look at Kathleen and her vision for the magazine, please turn to page 47.
