Overview The Santa Fe Institute was founded in 1984 by George Cowan, David Pines, Stirling Colgate, Murray Gell-Mann, Nick Metropolis, Herb and author of At Home in the Universe, tackles this question. Kauffman here defines life as being present in any system that reproduces itself and completes at least one thermodynamic ther·mo·dy·nam·ic adj. 1.
