Introducing Postmodernism.

INTRODUCING POSTMODERNISM. Richard Appignanesi. 2005. Read by the author. 2 cds. 2 hrs. Naxos Audiobooks. 9-62634-363-x. $19.95. Plastic; content, author notes. A

Postmodernism, or PoMo as this highly informative program calls it, defies easy definition. Appignanesi discusses structuralism structuralism, theory that uses culturally interconnected signs to reconstruct systems of relationships rather than studying isolated, material things in themselves. This method found wide use from the early 20th cent. , semiotics semiotics or semiology, discipline deriving from the American logician C. S. Peirce and the French linguist Ferdinand de Saussure. It has come to mean generally the study of any cultural product (e.g., a text) as a formal system of signs. , and deconstructionism as they apply to postmodernism in architecture, politics, literature, and culture. The format of this audiobook is not a straight read-through of a text. There are short dramatizations that are supposed to illustrate the different points of view of different theoreticians such as Foucalt. Levi-Strauss, Derrida, Barthes, Lacan, and Lyotard.

I have listened to this tape several times and each time have learned about new aspects of PoMo. However, there are some parts of this multimedia presentation that are in questionable or poor taste. And some aspects (e.g., describing a Holocaust theme park and using a derogatory de·rog·a·to·ry
