Introducing ... ClickonCareers.com: a new workforce development system for the digital drive.

While many businesses are dealing with the current "jobless recovery A jobless recovery or jobless growth is a phrase used by economists to describe the recovery from a recession which does not produce strong growth in employment. The phrase originated in the early 1990s in the United States, to describe the economic recovery at the end of ," long-term Long-term

demographic trends point to workforce shortages in the future. The Detroit Regional Chamber, in partnership with three other associations, is offering a new workforce development tool to help meet one particular need--that of the skilled/technical workforce.

While the primary focus of our K-12 education system is preparing people for college, a curious development has quietly been taken place in the labor market labor market A place where labor is exchanged for wages; an LM is defined by geography, education and technical expertise, occupation, licensure or certification requirements, and job experience . The real growth in the job market is in "technical" occupations that require training beyond high school but not necessarily a four-year degree. The demand for four-year degrees has not changed much over the last 20 years--remaining at about 20 percent of the workforce.

In response, we have developed a new program called ClickonCareers.com, a workforce development system designed to increase the number of technical workers in the region and provide employers with a tool to recruit them. As the name suggests, ClickonCareers.com is an Internet-based system, although it's much more than just a Website.

Research confirms that many young people have a fairly limited awareness of what kind of jobs are really available and what they involve. Consequently, the Chamber partnered with the American Society of Employers, the Michigan Michigan (mĭsh`ĭgən), upper midwestern state of the United States. It consists of two peninsulas thrusting into the Great Lakes and has borders with Ohio and Indiana (S), Wisconsin (W), and the Canadian province of Ontario (N,E).  Health Council and the Great Lakes Great Lakes, group of five freshwater lakes, central North America, creating a natural border between the United States and Canada and forming the largest body of freshwater in the world, with a combined surface area of c.95,000 sq mi (246,050 sq km).  Construction Alliance to create ClickonCareers.com. The Website allows users free access to:

* Explore over 150 career profiles in manufacturing, health care, information technology and building and construction. These provide an at-a-glance profile that includes salary information, certification or degree requirements and a description of job duties.

* Link directly to education and training providers in the region that prepare people for these careers.

* Post jobs for actual openings.

An aggressive advertising campaign, featuring TV and radio advertisements, is currently under way to encourage young people from high school-aged up to 30 years old to visit the site. Staff from the Chamber and our partner associations are making presentations to high school counselors A school counselor is a counselor and educator who works in schools, and have historically been referred to as "guidance counselors" or "educational counselors," although "Professional School Counselor" is now the preferred term. , school administrators and others. Nearly 700 people a day are visiting the site. The Hudson-Webber Foundation, the Kresge Foundation Kresge Foundation (krĕs`kē), fund established (1924) by retail chain store owner Sebastian S. Kresge (1867–1966) as a broad-purpose philanthropic institution.  and the Detroit Regional Economic Partnership provided seed funding Seed funding is investing capital to begin a new project, so that it has enough funds to sustain itself for a period of development until it reaches either a state where it is able to continue funding itself, or has created something in value so that it is worthy of future rounds  for this program.
