Into the Light: The Projected Image in American Art, 1964-77.


WHITNEY MUSEUM OF AMERICAN ART Whitney Museum of American Art, in New York City, founded in 1930 by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney. It was an outgrowth of the Whitney Studio (1914–18), the Whitney Studio Club (1918–28), and the Whitney Studio Galleries (1928–30).  

Whatever hope film and video work have for artistic excellence depends on addressing questions specific to the medium--both visual and spatial. Curator Chrissie Iles brings together nineteen seminal works that first posed such questions in the '60s and '70s, including pieces by Bruce Nauman Bruce Nauman (born December 6, 1941, in Fort Wayne, Indiana) is a contemporary American artist. His practice spans a broad range of media including sculpture, photography, neon, video, drawing and performance. , Dan Graham Dan Graham (born 1942) is a New York based U.S. artist. He is an influential figure in the field of contemporary art, both a practitioner of conceptual art and a well-versed art critic and theorist. , Andy Warhol, Michael Snow, and Yoko Ono. Projected film and video is a hot topic today, its nature and status much contested. Rasters and reception, broadcast and projection, phenomenology phenomenology, modern school of philosophy founded by Edmund Husserl. Its influence extended throughout Europe and was particularly important to the early development of existentialism.  and opticality: Theories about this art have been at once raw and pretentious, much like the medium itself. This exhibition should provide the perfect occasion to think it through from scratch.
