Intersil Releases Advanced PCI/PCI-X Hot Plug Controller.Business Editors/High-Tech Writers MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 12, 2004 Intersil Corporation (Nasdaq:ISIL ISIL International Society for Individual Liberty ISIL Interim Support Items List ISIL Intelligence Systems Integration Laboratory (Ft. Huachuca, Arizona; US Army facility for integrating intelligence systems) ): -- New IC Controls 4 Supplies with Programmable Over-Current Regulation and Fault Duration -- Increased Integration Reduces Board Space and Bill-of-Materials Costs Intersil Corporation (Nasdaq:ISIL), a world leader in the design and manufacture of high performance analog solutions, today announced the release of the ISL ISL - Interface Specification Language. Xerox PARC. Interface description language used by the ILU (Inter-Language Unification) system. Includes descriptions of multiple inheritance, exceptions and garbage collection. E-mail: Bill Janssen <janssen@parc.xerox.com>. 6111 Hot Plug controller IC. This advanced IC offers increased integration with the inclusion of over-current and timing features that improve system performance while reducing the bill-of-materials (BOM) cost and board space. Targeted for servers, the ISL6111 is the industry's most complete and highly integrated Hot Plug solution for PCI (1) (Payment Card Industry) See PCI DSS. (2) (Peripheral Component Interconnect) The most widely used I/O bus (peripheral bus). and PCI-X (PCI eXtended) An enhanced PCI bus technology originally developed by IBM, HP and Compaq that is backward compatible with existing PCI cards. PCI and 32-bit PCI-X slots are physically the same, and PCI cards can plug into PCI-X slots. . "Our new ISL6111 is a performance and value upgrade for server board designers who are still using multiple-IC solutions that take up precious board space and add to the BOM and manufacturing costs," said Cindy Drapcho, Vice President of Intersil's Power Products. "No competing IC offers such an integrated solution that controls all four power rails with programmable current limiting Current limiting is the practice in electrical or electronic circuits of imposing an upper limit on the current that may be delivered to a load with the purpose of protecting the circuit generating or transmitting the current from harmful effects due to a short-circuit or similar and over-current duration timing in a near-chip-scale 5 X 5 mm package." A complete PCI slot (hardware) PCI slot - A connector on Peripheral Component Interconnect and the associated physical space occupied by the installed PCI card. power control solution is accomplished with one small ISL6111, two power MOSFETs and a few passive components. It provides a maximum current regulation to the load for each supply. Load current limiting begins when the load current on any of the four rails exceeds the user-programmed level and continues for the user-determined period of time. The current-regulation level is set using a single resistor and the duration is set with a single capacitor. The ISL6111 provides PCI or PCI-X slot power control for the four legacy supplies (-12 V, +12 V, +5 V and +3.3 V). For the 3.3-V and 5-V supplies, current monitoring is accomplished by sensing the voltage across external current-sense resistors and current regulation is provided by active current modulation through external N-channel MOSFETs. For the +12-V and -12-V supplies, both current monitoring and current regulation are provided internally. Any over-current condition places the associated control switch in a linear mode to regulate current to the resistor-programmed level. An over-current condition is defined as a current level, greater than the programmed setting, that transitions through the threshold with a quick ramp (less than 0.5 us). This current regulation mode is maintained until the over-current condition ceases or the regulation duration period, as determined by selected capacitor value, expires. In the current-regulation mode the IC's timing pin charges the capacitor with a 20-uA current until the capacitor voltage reaches 2.8 V, at which time a turn-off latch is set on all four control switches. This results in the open drain Open drain is one of the many different electrical input/output standards in digital designs today. Definition The word "drain" in the term "Open-drain" refers to the drain terminal of a MOSFET transistor. (The analogous term for BJT devices is open collector. fault (FLTN) output going low, signaling a latched off state. Cycling the ENABLE pin low clears the FLTN latch.
