Interpol pushing to be UN Globocop.

I write to you with regard to an article which appeared in THE NEW AMERICAN (Vol. 20, No. 22) November 1, 2004 entitled "Interpol Pushing to Be UN-Globocop."

The raid by Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agents on the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas, occurred on February 28, 1993. At the time of the raid, Ronald K. Noble had no authority whatsoever over ATF. He was not confirmed by the U.S. Senate as Assistant Secretary for Enforcement for the U.S. Treasury Department until May 1993. Your article erroneously states that Mr. Noble approved the Waco raid.

With regards to the statement in your article about criticism following the raid, you should be aware that Mr. Noble was appointed by then-Treasury Secretary Lloyd Bentsen to oversee a comprehensive review of the events in Waco. The review, overseen by Mr. Noble, was praised for its thoroughness by a congressional sub-committee, by all major media and by an independent high-ranking oversight panel appointed by Treasury Secretary Bentsen.

Brave men and women from ATF risked and sacrificed their lives on February 28, 1993. We owe it to them and to all enforcement officers to ensure that only accurate stories about such matters are published.

We would ask you to publish a correction in the next issue of THE NEW AMERICAN in order to rectify these problems.

At the time of the February 28, 1993 ATF assault on Waco's Mt. Carmel Church, Mr. Noble had been nominated to serve as an assistant Treasury Secretary, and he acted in that capacity prior to being approved by the Senate, despite the fact that he had "no authority" to do so. In this respect, Mr. Noble's conduct reflected the arrogant presumption that typified the Clinton administration.

In a review of government inquiries into the Waco atrocity, the July 25, 1995 Los Angeles Times noted that "Noble reviewed the strategy for the first raid before it occurred...." The Justice Department's official "Report to the Deputy Attorney General on the Events at Waco, Texas" adds that after the initial raid, Mr. Noble was involved in the decision to dispatch the FBI's Hostage Rescue Team (HRT) to Waco. The HRT conducted the subsequent siege and bears much of the responsibility for its tragic outcome.--Ed.
