Far Side of the Moon * Written and directed by Robert Lepage * TLA (Three Letter Acronym) The epitome of acronyms! While two-, four- and five-letter acronyms exist, there are more three-letter acronyms. Obviously, three words to describe a concept or product is the most popular.

, oddly funny, absurdist, and visually inventive, Far Side of the Moon, the latest from prodigiously talented Canadian playwright-director-actor Robert Lepage, practically aches. It's about a grumpy, bookish book·ish

3. Relying chiefly on book learning:
, 40-something dreamer (Lepage) dealing with the death of his chic mother (Aline-Marie Cadieux) and battling an ongoing rivalry with his vacuous gay weatherman brother (Lepage, again). Meanwhile, our hero struggles with his Ph.D. thesis about how narcissism narcissism (närsĭs`ĭzəm), Freudian term, drawn from the Greek myth of Narcissus, indicating an exclusive self-absorption. In psychoanalysis, narcissism is considered a normal stage in the development of children.  fuels space travel, screws up when reaching out to his ex-wife, nearly gets seduced by his brother's lover (Marco Poulin), and generally searches in vain for signs of intelligent life in the cosmos.

For all of Lepage's smarts and visual audacity--check out all that circular imagery-some may find his existential quest too cerebral. Maybe if the movie were instead about a 30-something grappling with the same issues, cult audiences might embrace it the way they did, say, Garden State. For those who've figured out that the meaning of existence can be baffling baf·fle

 even for people past puberty, though, Far Side of the Moon is a sometimes lumpy but often beautiful study of a wayward life.
