Interphase announces expanded FDDI product line.

DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 12, 1995--Interphase Corp. (NASDAQ/NMS:INPH) Tuesday announced an expansion of the company's Fiber Distributed Data Interface See FDDI.

Fiber Distributed Data Interface - (FDDI) A 100 Mbit/s ANSI standard local area network architecture, defined in X3T9.5. The underlying medium is optical fibre (though it can be copper cable, in which case it may be called CDDI) and the topology is a
(FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface) Often pronounced "fiddy," it was a LAN and MAN access method that had its heyday in the mid-1990s. FDDI was an ANSI standard token passing network that transmitted 100 Mbps over optical fiber up to 10 kilometers. ) product line, with the introduction of five new products.

The products include new adapters for Sun SPARCstation, Silicon Graphics and emerging PCI- and PMC-based systems, as well as standalone workgroup concentrators. FDDI is a 100 megabit-per-second local area network (LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used. ) technology used extensively for high-speed backbones and high-performance workstation connectivity.

"These new products reinforce Interphase's commitment to providing our customers with high-speed LAN technology and industry-leading price/performance," said Jim Gleason, vice president of sales, operations and marketing for Interphase. "The market for FDDI products remains strong, even with the availability of newer technologies like ATM and Fast Ethernet as choices for network managers."

Interphase's adapters are based on a proven FDDI core, combined with extensive ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) Pronounced "a-sick." A chip that is custom designed for a specific application rather than a general-purpose chip such as a microprocessor.  development experience designed to provide a high-performance interface between the FDDI chipset and the system backplane. Interphase couples this high-performance ASIC with an on-board processor designed specifically to provide SMT (1) (Surface Mount Technology) See surface mount.

(2) (Station ManagemenT) An FDDI network management protocol that provides direct management. Only one node requires the software.

High levels of integration and technology development provide extensive functionality at low cost and high performance.

The new products announced by the company include:

-- Interphase 4611 SBus FDDI Adapter: A Dual Attachment Station (DAS) option has been added to the 4611 SBus FDDI adapter, representing the only single-slot DAS solution on the market today. This now allows Sun servers and workstations to connect directly to an FDDI backbone without the use of a concentrator.

Because it can access both FDDI dual, counter-rotating rings, the DAS is capable of wrapping the ring in case of a device failure. The DAS version of the 4611 also provides redundancy via dual homing by connecting each port of the adapter to two separate concentrators.

The 4611 is $1,450 for single-attached multimode fiber, $1,850 for dual-attached multimode fiber, and $1,250 for single-attached copper.

-- Interphase 5511 PCI (1) (Payment Card Industry) See PCI DSS.

(2) (Peripheral Component Interconnect) The most widely used I/O bus (peripheral bus).
FDDI Adapter: This product gives PCI-based PCs, workstations and file servers easy access to an FDDI network, with the assurance that critical applications will perform reliably. The adapter will operate in Microsoft Windows NT, IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  AIX (Advanced Interactive eXecutive) IBM's Unix-based operating system which runs on its Intellistation workstations and pSeries, p5, iSeries and i5 server families. , and Novell NetWare stations. The 5511 is $950 for single-attached fiber, $1,295 for dual-attached fiber, and $695 for single-attached copper.

-- Interphase 4911 GIO FDDI Adapter: The 4911 GIO FDDI Adapter provides high-performance FDDI connectivity for Silicon Graphics Indy and Indigo Systems running the IRIX A Unix-based operating system from SGI that is used in its computer systems from desktop to supercomputer. It is an enhanced version of Unix System V Release 4. IRIX integrates the X Window system with OpenGL, creating the first real time 3D X environment.  operating system. The 4911 is $1,395 for single-attached fiber, $1,795 for dual-attached fiber and $1,195 for single-attached copper.

-- Interphase 4511 PMC FDDI Adapter: The Interphase 4511 is a high-performance PCI Mezzanine Card (hardware) PCI Mezzanine Card - (PMC) A family of low profile mezzanine cards for VMEbus, Futurebus+, desktop computers and other computer systems with logical and electrical layers based on the Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) specification. PMC is defined in IEEE P1386.  that provides a building-block approach to cost-effective implementation of FDDI technology on embedded computer systems. Drivers will include AIX and Windows NT. The 4511 is priced at $1,150 for single-attached fiber, $1,495 for dual-attached fiber, and $895 for single-attached copper.

-- Interphase M400 FDDI Concentrator: M400 offers FDDI for the first time at near switched-Ethernet prices. This attribute makes the M400 the lowest cost-per-port workgroup FDDI connectivity available from any vendor worldwide. The M400 is a highly reliable desktop FDDI concentrator offering low-cost 4- or 8-port configurations with copper or fiber connectivity and optional SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) A widely used network monitoring and control protocol. Data are passed from SNMP agents, which are hardware and/or software processes reporting activity in each network device (hub, router, bridge, etc.  management.

Prices range from $499 per port for 8-port copper unmanaged units, to $985 per port for 8-port fiber units with SNMP management.

All products are now available from Interphase and its worldwide distribution channels. All prices are manufacturer's list in U.S. dollars.

Interphase, based in Dallas, is a leading supplier of desktop and server I/O products for high-speed networks. The company has pioneered performance adapter processing in client/server environments for more than 20 years, leading the industry in SCSI SCSI
