Interphase announces 6200 VME-to-PMC adapter for embedded systems: provides easy and low-cost expansion to existing VME designs and the bandwidth to handle emerging high-speed communication protocols.SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 17, 1996--Interphase Corp. (NASDAQ/NMS:INPH) Tuesday announced the 6200 VME (Virtual Machine Environment) An operating system from Fujitsu Services (formerly ICL) that runs on its Series 39 mainframes. Introduced in 1975, VME is a comprehensive product that provides a variety of utilities for datacenter operations. Baseboard base·board n. A molding that conceals the joint between an interior wall and the floor. Also called mopboard. Noun 1. , which enables industry-standard PCI Mezzanine Cards (PMC (1) See Portable Media Center. (2) (PCI Mezzanine Card) A PCI-based mezzanine card that is widely adapted to VMEbus, CompactPCI and PCI cards. ) to be utilized for a wide variety of I/O (Input/Output) The transfer of data between the CPU and a peripheral device. Every transfer is an output from one device and an input to another. See PC input/output. I/O - Input/Output expansion in VME-based systems. With this new adapter, system integrators and embedded systems developers can deploy today's newer I/O technologies which are performance and cost-optimized for a variety of embedded applications. "The Interphase 6200 provides a greater deal of flexibility in dealing with today's complex VME applications by using industry-standard PMC modules for the I/O," said Rick Donihoo, Interphase marketing manager. "This I/O modularity offers VME OEMs and system integrators a low cost and faster-to-market alternative to typical in-house designs." Powerful VME Interface Solution The 6200 baseboard is a 6U VME design with a PCI-to-VME64 interface and two standard PMC slots. In order to maximize bandwidth utilization, the 6200 uses built-in FIFOs for write posting the data transfer between the PCI bus and VMEbus. In addition, the 6200 offers block transfer capability and implements a full suite of VMEbus address and data transfer modes including D64. And because the 6200 provides full VMEbus controller functionality with multi-level arbitration modes, a systems developer has the maximum level of design flexibility in designing their applications. Available immediately, the Interphase 6200 VME Baseboard sells in single unit quantities for $1,395. A Complete Line of Plug-in PMC Modules The 6200 accommodates two IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, New York, www.ieee.org) A membership organization that includes engineers, scientists and students in electronics and allied fields. P1386.1 compliant PMC modules, giving systems developers access to a whole new generation of low cost and readily available specialized I/O. Interphase offers a number of plug-in PMC modules that address a variety of LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used. and mass storage I/O. These modules include: -- 4515 PMC ATM Adapter - provides full duplex 155Mbps SONET OC-3 connectivity with media options for multimode fiber, single mode fiber and Category 5 copper UTP UTP (uridine triphosphate): see uracil. (Unshielded Twisted Pair) See twisted pair. UTP - unshielded twisted pair wiring. -- 4511 PMC FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface) Often pronounced "fiddy," it was a LAN and MAN access method that had its heyday in the mid-1990s. FDDI was an ANSI standard token passing network that transmitted 100 Mbps over optical fiber up to 10 kilometers. Adapter - provides 100Mbps FDDI connectivity with media options for multimode fiber and Category 5 copper UTP wiring -- 4524 PMC100Base-T Adapter - provides 802.3u 100Base-T connectivity with full auto-negotiation capabilities to select full or half duplex for 100-Mbit or 10-Mbit connections, and supports both TX (Category 5 UTP copper cable) and T4 (4-pair Category 3 UTP copper cable). -- 4522 PMC 100VG-AnyLAN Adapter - provides 802.12 100VG-AnyLAN connectivity or 10Base-T CSMA-CD connectivity using a single RJ-45 Category 3 UTP copper cable connector. -- 4526 PMC Fibre Channel Adapter - provides full duplex Fibre Channel connectivity, supports Class 1, 2 and 3 Services and supports 1062.531 and 266 Mbaud link speeds. 6200 Software Development Kit To assist system integrators with the implementation of 6200-based solutions, the product includes an optional software development kit (SDK (Software Developer's Kit) See developer's toolkit and Windows SDK. SDK - Software Developers Kit (or "Software Development Kit"). ) providing sample UNIX UNIX Operating system for digital computers, developed by Ken Thompson of Bell Laboratories in 1969. It was initially designed for a single user (the name was a pun on the earlier operating system Multics). drivers, software development documentation and telephone support from the Interphase Technical Support Department. On Display at Embedded Systems Conference The Interphase 6200 Series Solution is on display in the Hewlett-Packard Corp. Booth 1602 at the Embedded Systems Conference taking place Sept. 17-19 in the San Jose Convention Center. Founded in 1974, Interphase Corp. is a leading international supplier of high-performance computer networking, mass storage and remote access products. The company's primary product lines are based on established and emerging technologies for the high-speed transmission and storage of information in local and wide area networking environments (LANs and WANs). The LAN and mass storage products are based upon ATM, FDDI, Fast Ethernet, SCSI SCSI in full Small Computer System Interface Once common standard for connecting peripheral devices (disks, modems, printers, etc.) to small and medium-sized computers. SCSI has given way to faster standards, such as Firewire and USB. and Fibre Channel technologies, and provides the network interface within server and desktop environments.
