Internet Systems Consortium, APNIC and APJII Install First Root Nameserver in Jakarta, Indonesia.REDWOOD CITY, Calif. -- Internet Systems Consortium In January 2004 the projects, assets and staff of Internet Software Consortium were transferred to a new company, Internet Systems Consortium. The new company is a US Federal 501c(3) public-benefit, non-profit corporation. (ISC (1) (Internet Systems Consortium, Redwood City, CA www.isc.org) An organization founded by Paul Vixie, Carl Malamud and Rick Adams in 1994 and later sponsored by UUNET and other Internet companies. ), APNIC APNIC Asia Pacific Network Information Centre APNIC Asia Pacific Network Information Center and APJII APJII Asosiasi Penyelenggara Jasa Internet Indonesia have installed a new F-root nameserver in Jakarta, Indonesia. The new server was deployed in cooperation with Asosiasi Penyelenggara Jasa Internet Indonesia (APJII) and is hosted at the Indonesia Internet Exchange This article or section needs sources or references that appear in reliable, third-party publications. Joao Damas, F-root Programme Manager, stated, "ISC is extremely happy to be working with APJII and APNIC in bringing Internet services closer to the Indonesian Internet community, enhancing it's resilience and technical independence from external resources and services and contributing to create a global network. Installation in Indonesia brings DNS (Domain Name System) A system for converting host names and domain names into IP addresses on the Internet or on local networks that use the TCP/IP protocol. For example, when a Web site address is given to the DNS either by typing a URL in a browser or behind the root servers closer to one of the most important countries in the Asia Pacific region." Root servers make available information for finding authoritative servers for top-level domains; there are several hundred such domains, including "COM", "ORG", "UK" and "ID". Computers use this information interpret URLs, e-mail addresses, and perform other types of Internet transactions. Paul Wilson, Director General of APNIC, added, "This is the seventh root server installation which APNIC has supported in the Asia Pacific. We are pleased with our ongoing progress to provide ISPs and the Internet community at large with faster DNS response and additional resilience to DNS services, both of which are critical improvements in the Asia Pacific region." Heru Nugroho, Secretary General of APJII, commented, "The Indonesian Internet community has worked hard with ISC and APNIC to make the first root server installation in Indonesia a reality. We would like to thank all the individuals and organizations that have taken part in this important project. Initial measurements indicate a significant improvement of host name lookups felt by more than 100 providers that peer at the Indonesian Internet Exchange." In 2003 ISC deployed 17 new F-root nameserver sites around the globe enhancing Internet response times in key regions and reducing the vulnerability of the Internet Root nameserver system to malicious attacks. ISC has plans to deploy 12 new F-root nameservers around the globe in 2004. Jakarta is the sixth to be installed this year. ISC has increased its focus to include enhancing the stability of the global DNS directly through reliable F-root nameserver operations and ongoing operation of a DNS crisis coordination center, ISC's OARC OARC Operations Analysis and Research Center for DNS. ISC is also engaged with further protocol development efforts, particularly in the areas of DNS evolution and facilitating the transition to IPv6. ISC is supported by the donations of generous sponsors, program membership fees and specific fees for services. For program or donation information, please visit our website at http://www.isc.org.
