WatchGuard provided Firebox Vclass security appliances to protect summit participants from security breaches and malicious cyber-threats. The Firebox Vclass integrated firewall and VPN (Virtual Private Network) A private network that is configured within a public network (a carrier's network or the Internet) in order to take advantage of the economies of scale and management facilities of large networks.  (Virtual Private Network) appliances secured the network infrastructure built specifically for the summit, which included four separate networks and more than 125 Virtual LANs (Local Area Networks), as well as VPN connections for more than 450 workstations and hundreds of private laptops. "With the presence of the American Secretary of State Colin Powell and his delegation, we anticipated that hackers, cyber terrorists and spies worldwide would try to break network security," said Joash Herbrink of Kahuna, the IT company responsible for building and managing the network. "The security infrastructure, anchored by the WatchGuard Firebox Vclass appliances, stopped tens of thousands of attacks varying from simple to very sophisticated and professional."

"Security, obviously, was of paramount importance and the IT environment was very demanding, requiring high-speed connections, flexibility and stability -- all over four separate networks," said Marco Weeber, general manager of WatchGuard, Benelux. "If our Firebox Vclass products can perform under these demanding circumstances, our customers can feel confident that we can handle their security requirements."

"The cooperation between all parties involved in building the network infrastructure was excellent," said Tjeu Knaapen, Interim Head ICT (1) (Information and Communications Technology) An umbrella term for the information technology field. See IT.
