International Rectifier Introduces Sub-2V Output, High Current, High Efficiency DC-to-DC Converters for Space Satellite Applications.Technology Writers EL SEGUNDO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 8, 2004 International Rectifier, IR(r) (NYSE NYSE See: New York Stock Exchange :IRF IRF Interferon Regulatory Factor IRF International Religious Freedom IRF Institut for Rationel Farmakoterapi (German) IRF Inherited Rights Filter (Novell) IRF Inherited Rights Filter ), today introduces the Z Series family of 1.5V, 2.5V and 3.3V, single output DC-to-DC converters for geo-synchronous (GEO) and low earth orbit (communications) low earth orbit - (LEO) The kind of orbit used by communications satellites that will offer high bandwidth for video on demand, television, and Internet communications. (LEO) satellite power systems. Satellite power systems must supply proper voltage and current for complementary metal oxide semiconductor See CMOS. (integrated circuit) Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor - (CMOS) A semiconductor fabrication technology using a combination of n- and p-doped semiconductor material to achieve low power dissipation. (CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) Pronounced "c-moss." The most widely used integrated circuit design. It is found in almost every electronic product from handheld devices to mainframes. ) transistors and now BiCMOS, a combination of bipolar and CMOS. IR's new DC-DC DC-DC Direct Current to Direct Current (power conversion) converters employ synchronous output rectification and include the Z2801R5S, a 1.5V, 20A/30W device that delivers 79% efficiency. IR's "off-the-shelf" solution enables a shorter lead-time than custom designs, streamlining satellite project time-to-market. "The Z Series is designed to fill the increasing demand for an off-the-shelf solution rather than a custom design for the low voltages required by advanced-technology systems used in new digital signal processors and digital logic products in space applications," said Bryan Rogers, vice president of sales and marketing, Hi-Rel Products. The new converters feature high radiation immunity, 100krad (Si) minimum total ionizing dose (TID tid 3 times a day ) and single event effect (SEE) with LET (linear energy transfer) of greater than 80 MeV-mg square centimeters. Surface-mount technology is used for the larger passive and power components, while hybrid devices are used for control circuits to simplify assembly and achieve a small footprint. The components used in the Z Series converters are selected and de-rated per the requirements of MIL-STD-975 and MIL-STD-1547. A data sheet is posted on the IR Web site: http://www.irf.com/product-info/datasheets/hirel/z28.pdf Availability and Pricing The new devices are available unscreened and screened to Class K per MIL-PRF-38534. Prices begin at US $3500 each for engineering models. Contact your local IR sales office or IR's Santa Clara facility Inside Sales Group (408-727-2121) for additional information.
