) introduced two innovative, space-saving devices for high-reliability (hi-rel) power management circuits used in spacecraft, launch vehicle and weapon system applications.

The new radiation-hardened, or RAD-Hard(TM), synchronous MOSFET (Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor) The most popular and widely used type of field effect transistor (see FET). MOSFETs are either NMOS (n-channel) or PMOS (p-channel) transistors, which are fabricated as individually packaged  rectifiers combine a HEXFET HEXFET Hexagonal Field Effect Transistor (R) MOSFET and high efficiency Schottky rectifier rectifier, component of an electric circuit used to change alternating current to direct current. Rectifiers are made in various forms, all operating on the principle that current passes through them freely in one direction but only slightly or not at all in the  into one package ("Co-Pack"). The new devices are designed to fill the demand for small and efficient power components in space-level circuits.

The trend in hi-rel memory and microprocessor power systems continue to demand lower operating voltages, from 3.3V to 2.5V and 1.8V. At the same time, current ratings have risen to the range of 20A to 30A or more. Lower voltage and higher current requires larger components. The new hi-rel Co-Pack device combines two devices into a single package.

Richard Southwell, International Rectifier Hi-Rel Components Group Marketing Manager, said, "The new hermetically her·met·ic   also her·met·i·cal
adj.
1. Completely sealed, especially against the escape or entry of air.

2. Impervious to outside interference or influence:
sealed Co-Pack devices are extremely efficient and reliable for DC-DC DC-DC Direct Current to Direct Current (power conversion)  converter and power management circuits requiring as much as 75 amps. The new devices reduce component count, circuit size and weight."

Technical Highlights

In typical DC-DC converter applications, a Schottky rectifier is placed in parallel with a synchronous MOSFET (sync FET FET: see transistor.

(Field Effect Transistor) One of two major categories of transistor; the other is bipolar. FETs use a gate element that, when charged, creates an electromagnetic field that changes the conductivity of a silicon
) to conduct current and avoid current shoot-through. IR's sync FET/Schottky diode Co-Pack devices shrink package count by one. Co-packaging also decreases MOSFET-to-Schottky diode wiring inductance in high frequency applications.

The new IRHSNA57Z60 and IRHSNA57064 have a synchronous N-channel RAD-Hard HEXFET power MOSFET co-packaged with an efficient Schottky rectifier. The new devices replace output Schottky rectifiers in DC-DC converters with output current requirements up to 75A.

The new devices are packaged in the hermetically sealed surface-mount SMD-2 package, and can be ordered on a carrier to facilitate assembly integration. Access the data sheet at http://www.irf.com/datasheets/irhsna57z60.pdf.

Pricing and Availability

The new IRHSNA57Z60 is available immediately, while the IRHSNA57064 is expected to be available by the end of September 2001. Pricing is US $278.74 each in 500-unit quantities.
