International Rectifier Introduces New 1200V Short-Circuit-Rated Inverter Modules for Variable Speed Motor Drives.Technology Editors EL SEGUNDO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 5, 2003 International Rectifier, IR(R) (NYSE NYSE See: New York Stock Exchange :IRF), today introduces a new family of 1200V, short-circuit-rated, motor drive modules with six IGBTs, each with a built-in free-wheeling diode. The new modules expand the IR line of inverter modules used in variable speed motor drives for plastics forming machines, packaging equipment, printing presses and other industrial applications up to 15kW. The new devices are housed in the ECONO2 package. Two configurations are available: a three-phase inverter and a power integrated module or PIM, which combines a three-phase bridge, a brake and a three-phase inverter. Both module types include a negative temperature coefficient A negative temperature coefficient (NTC) occurs when the thermal conductivity of a material rises with increasing temperature, typically in a defined temperature range. For most materials, the thermal conductivity will decrease with increasing temperature. (NTC) thermistor Thermistor An electrical resistor with a relatively large negative temperature coefficient of resistance. Thermistors are useful for measuring temperature and gas flow or wind velocity. . The new inverter module family is composed of three SixPack(TM) GB25XF120K, GB35XF120K and GB50XF120K fully-insulated inverter modules based on IR's non punch-through (NPT) IGBTs. The IGBTs feature a square reverse-bias safe operating area For power semiconductor device (such as BJT, MOSFET, thyristor or IGBT) a safe operating area (SOA) is defined as the voltage and current conditions over which the device can be expected to operate without self-damage. (RBSOA RBSOA Reverse Biased Safe Operating Area (electronics) ), and withstand 10 microseconds short circuits. A low and positive temperature coefficient Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) refers to materials that experience an increase in electrical resistance when their temperature is raised. Materials which have useful engineering applications usually show a relatively rapid increase with temperature, i.e. improves ruggedness during start-up and prevents abnormal current and voltage spikes. Dr. Francesco Vallone, International Rectifier Product Marketing Manager, said, "The 'square' RBSOA provides maximum current rating up to the maximum voltage rating, and enables soft shutdown for the gate driver circuits. A HEXFRED(R) antiparallel antiparallel /an·ti·par·al·lel/ (-par´ah-lel) denoting molecules arranged side by side but in opposite directions. diode with ultrasoft recovery characteristics and low EMI is built-in, and reduces snubbing circuitry requirements." The new IGBT IGBT Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor IGBT Integrated Gate Bipolar Transistor modules work best with IR's high voltage IC gate drivers such as the IR22xx series, simplifying component procurement and circuit design.
