International Peer-Review Journal Reviews First Clinical Results From FONAR Stand-Up MRI.

FONAR Corporation (Nasdaq:FONR), The MRI Specialist(TM), reported today that a clinical review of the first observations on the FONAR Stand-Up(TM) MRI was the lead article in the recent Journal of the Hong Kong College of Radiologists, the official peer-reviewed academic journal of the Hong Kong College of Radiologists. The Stand-Up(TM) MRI is an Upright(TM) imaging system by FONAR.

The clinical review article is titled, "Upright, Weight-bearing, Dynamic-kinetic MRI of the Spine -- Review of the First Clinical Results." The lead author is Professor J. Randy Jinkins, M.D., a senior research fellow with FONAR and a Professor of Radiology at Drexel University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The review article abstract states that the potential relative benefits of upright, weight-bearing, dynamic-kinetic spinal imaging over that of recumbent MRI include the revelation of occult disease dependent on true axial loading. The unmasking of kinetic-dependent disease, and the ability to scan the patient in a clinically relevant position for the signs and symptoms is another key capability. The Stand-Up(TM) MRI demonstrated a low claustrophobic potential and yielded relatively high-resolution images with little motion, magnetic susceptibility, or chemical shift artifacts.

In conclusion, the article stated that the evidence thus far indicates that positional/dynamic-kinetic MRI (p/kMRI) may prove to be efficacious to incorporate as part of the clinical diagnosis-treatment paradigm for patients with spiral radicular and referred pain syndromes originating from spinal pathology. Overall, it was found that recumbent MRI underestimated the maximum degree of degenerative spinal pathology and missed its dynamic nature altogether -- factors that are optimally revealed with p/kMRI.
