International Museum of Women Selects Local Women Architects for Pier 26 Renovation.

, and Allison Williams, FAIA, was selected for their design and technical expertise, collaborative approach and commitment to IMOW's mission to build a unique and exciting facility that inspires global change in women's lives.

IMOW signed an Exclusive Right to Negotiate (ERN) agreement with the Port Commission in June 2003 to renovate the historic warehouse at Pier 26 into a 150,000-square-foot facility. Scheduled to open in 2008, the Museum is projected to attract at least half a million visitors per year who will generate expenditures of as much as $27 million annually to the San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden  economy.  and contemporary issues, as well as provide both a physical and virtual gathering place for the international women's community.

"The collaborative energy and creativity that Allison and Marsha have demonstrated in our initial meetings is very exciting," said IMOW board chair and founding president Elizabeth Colton. "I am confident they have the skill and passion required to help us create a unique, dynamic space where, for the very first time, women's history will be chronicled from a global perspective and women's voices heard and valued equally."

While IMOW is moving aggressively to raise the $120 million to build the facility, LMSA + Ai will begin their efforts by performing due diligence Research; analysis; your homework. This term has caught on in all industries, because it sounds so "wired." Who would want to do analysis or research when they can do due diligence. The proposed IMOW facility will include extensive permanent and temporary exhibition spaces; education, teen and media centers; an auditorium, a restaurant and public space. This month, IMOW began a series of workshops with an international group of scholars, educators, artists, scientists and community leaders to develop concepts and content for the Museum's exhibits.

LMSA + Ai's combined experience includes success with several museum and civic projects, as well as creative preservation and renovation of existing and historic structures.
