Intergraph debuts first NFS product with OLE support for Windows NT; DiskAccess introduced at Windows NT Solutions.

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 27, 1996--Intergraph Corporation today at Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking.  Intranet Solutions `96 debuted the first Network File System (NFS (Network File System) The file sharing protocol in a Unix network. This de facto Unix standard, which is widely known as a "distributed file system," was developed by Sun. See file sharing protocol and WebNFS.

(R)) product to support Object Linking and Embedding See OLE.

(operating system) Object Linking and Embedding - (OLE) A distributed object system and protocol from Microsoft, also used on the Acorn Archimedes. OLE allows an editor to "farm out" part of a document to another editor and then reimport it.
(OLE), announced Tommy Steele Tommy Steele OBE (born December 17, 1936 in London, England) is an English entertainer. Steele is widely regarded as Britain's first pop idol. Born Thomas Willam Hicks , president of Intergraph Software Solutions.

DiskAccess(TM) 3.0, an NFS client, supports OLE through a new path-based architecture that redefines the way NFS operates in a Windows(R) environment, setting a new standard for Windows and UNIX UNIX

Operating system for digital computers, developed by Ken Thompson of Bell Laboratories in 1969. It was initially designed for a single user (the name was a pun on the earlier operating system Multics).
interoperability that is unparalleled in the industry today, explained Steele.

This approach allows users to establish OLE links to files on UNIX systems and Windows systems with equal ease. It also enables the use of UNC (Universal Naming Convention) A standard for identifying servers, printers and other resources in a network, which originated in the Unix community. A UNC path uses double slashes or backslashes to precede the name of the computer.  and multi-part pathing to mount NFS resources, avoiding the limitations associated with mapping to drive letters.

Implementation of the new path-based architecture in DiskAccess is possible in part due to new redirector technology, developed jointly by Intergraph and Microsoft. The new redirector technology ensures a high-performing NFS product that fully supports the Windows operating system operating system (OS)

Software that controls the operation of a computer, directs the input and output of data, keeps track of files, and controls the processing of computer programs.
. "The result is a next-generation, path-based NFS client that is secure, flexible, and robust," Steele said. "It was our goal to create an NFS client for Windows NT(R) that would equal the performance our customers had experienced with NFS on UNIX. DiskAccess 3.0 promises to be the best-performing NFS client for Windows NT on the market."

The greatest impact of the new path-based technology can be seen when embedding objects within documents. Support for OLE makes it possible for a user to embed a link to an object located on an NFS mounted drive in a document. When the document is opened, days or weeks later, the link is re-established, displaying any updates to the linked object. The link is maintained even if the document is mailed to another user.

"This advance dramatically affects how OLE-enabled applications work in a mixed Windows and UNIX environment," Steele said.

Two other features that are firsts in the industry are support for symbolic links with automount capability and Packet-Smart(TM) technology. Packet-Smart technology dramatically reduces packet count on file transfers by tuning packet transmissions to individual server characteristics. The result is significant performance gains. Also, symbolic links are followed even to files located on other NFS systems. When a symbolic link is selected, DiskAccess automatically mounts the drive and opens the file.

Support for NFS is essential when working in multivendor networking environments. DiskAccess is 100-percent NFS compatible and fully integrated into the Windows environment (1) (upper case "W") Refers to computers running under a Microsoft Windows operating system.

(2) (lower case "w") Also called a "windowing environment," it refers to any software that provides multiple windows on screen such as Windows, Mac, Motif and X Window.
. It features a familiar and easy-to-use interface, installation on Microsoft's native TCP/IP stack An implementation of the TCP/IP communications protocol. Network architectures designed in layers, such as TCP/IP, OSI and SNA, are called "stacks." See TCP/IP, OSI model and protocol stack. , and flexible configuration. Browsing and mounting of NFS file and print resources is easily accomplished from Windows Explorer See Explorer. , Network Neighborhood, or File Manager.

DiskAccess is a multithreaded multithreaded - multithreading , 32-bit application that supports UNC path names, long file names File names that exceed the common eight plus three (8.3) character limitation used in DOS and Windows 3.1. Unix, Mac and Windows starting with Windows 95 support long file names.

For compatibility with the 8.
, PC-NFSD authentication, file sharing, and printing. DiskAccess also provides telnet, TN3270 and TN5250 emulation, ftp, rshd, and a host of utilities such as ping, finger, dig, and more. DiskAccess is compatible with Windows NT 4.0 and 3.51.

DiskAccess 3.0 for Windows NT represents the next generation of PC-based NFS clients and replaces PC-NFS for Windows NT, Intergraph's previous collaborative effort with Sun Microsystems. Special upgrade offers will be available fur users of Intergraph's PC-NFS for Windows NT. Users who purchased Intergraph's PC-NFS after Aug. 1, 1996, and register before Dec. 31, 1996, will receive a free upgrade to DiskAccess for Windows NT. Intergraph is also offering aggressive promotional pricing for users of competing products.

DiskAccess for Windows NT is scheduled to ship in September 1996.
