Since Michael E. Ross, a journalist for MSNBC.com in Seattle, Washington, spent most of his professional life working for newspapers, it's not surprising that perhaps the best piece in his collection of 24 essays and reportage is a journalistic-style, none-too-worshipful profile of a media figure, Robert L. Johnson Robert L. Johnson (born April 8, 1946) is an American businessman and the founder of Black Entertainment Television (BET), and was its chairman and chief executive officer. .

Johnson, the founder of Black Entertainment Television (BET), became the first black American billionaire. Ross reviews Johnson's encounters with high-stakes capitalism--he sold B.E.T to Viacom in 1998 and later became principal owner of the Charlotte Bobcats of the N.B.A.

Johnson "is guilty," Ross says, "of nothing more than knowing which way the American wind blows, understanding how U.S. conglomerates will eventually move into other equally underexplored markets."

The essays, some written for MSNBC MSNBC Microsoft/National Broadcasting Company  and a couple for Konch, a magazine published by Ishmael Reed, comprise a wide spectrum, beginning with Ross's reflections on reaching age 43, The New York New York, state, United States
New York, Middle Atlantic state of the United States. It is bordered by Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the Atlantic Ocean (E), New Jersey and Pennsylvania (S), Lakes Erie and Ontario and the Canadian province of
 Times as workplace, media speak, Jayson Blair and a critique of a Times magazine article by a white conservative promoting race hate. [The Interesting Times title refers in part to Ross's earlier career at The New York Times as a cultural writer and editor, and his experiences there are woven throughout.] The topics also range through such subjects as police shootings, politicians from AI Gore to Arnold Schwarzenegger, black patriotism, popular culture and the Cuban youngster Elian Gonzalez.
