InterDigital Communications Corporation (Nasdaq:IDCC IDCC Integrated Dual-use Commercial Companies ), a leading developer of advanced wireless technologies, today announced that it has exceeded 1,000 patents and patents pending worldwide covering digital wireless inventions.

Since last year, InterDigital has substantially increased the size of its patent portfolio by developing important inventions and filing patents on the new wireless inventions worldwide. InterDigital's intellectual property has generated substantial licensing revenue for InterDigital and reflects years of innovation in wireless technology and products.

The intellectual property portfolio covers TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) A satellite and cellular phone technology that interleaves multiple digital signals onto a single high-speed channel. For cellular, TDMA triples the capacity of the original analog method (FDMA).  and CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) A method for transmitting simultaneous signals over a shared portion of the spectrum. The foremost application of CDMA is the digital cellular phone technology from QUALCOMM that operates in the 800 MHz band and 1.9 GHz PCS band.  digital wireless technology innovations filed around the world and represents InterDigital's strong heritage of technology design. It contains a near equal mix of TDMA and CDMA based patents and patent applications which stem from standards work and product development that InterDigital has conducted over the past 20 years.

Today, InterDigital's patents and patent applications cover several global air interface standards, including IS-54/136, GSM, PHS (Personal Handyphone System) A TDMA-based cellular phone system introduced in Japan in mid-1995. Operating in the 1880-1930 MHz band, PHS uses microcells that cover an area only 100 to 500 meters in diameter, resulting in lower equipment costs but requiring more base , PDC (1) (Primary Domain Controller) A Windows NT/2000 service that manages security for its local domain. Every domain has one PDC, which contains a database of usernames, passwords and permissions. , IS-95, DECT (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications) A cordless phone standard mostly used in Europe; however, DECT 6.0 is increasingly used worldwide. The first DECT standards were introduced by ETSI in 1992, and DECT phones have been used as cordless home phones as , TETRA and W-CDMA See WCDMA. , including FDD, TDD and CDMA 2000. The Company has licensed its inventions to telecommunications companies around the world to provide access to its technology know-how and patents.

For almost a decade, InterDigital has been developing CDMA technology and has amassed a deep heritage in technology designed for wide bandwidth applications. The large majority of CDMA patents filed over the past few years are directly applicable to third generation wireless products. InterDigital has participated actively in the 3G standards development process and a number of its contributions have been adopted.

InterDigital's expertise in CDMA technology is very broad, with inventions in areas such as system design, power control, multi-user detection, joint detection, interference cancellation, system overlay, RAKE receivers, diversity combining, spreading codes, multicode transmission, turbo codes, soft handover, and reverse pilot and reverse coherent detection, among others.

InterDigital develops advanced wireless technologies and products that drive voice and data communications. InterDigital offers solutions for mainstream wireless applications, which deliver cost and time-to-market advantages for its customers. By leveraging its technology and intellectual property into third generation standards and products, InterDigital is maximizing its long-term revenue and earnings opportunities.
