Intelligent Ethernet segment switch expands Allied Telesyn's 3600 line of hubs; AT-3724TR provides 8,000 MAC address capability.

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 25, 1995--Allied Telesyn International Corp. announced Tuesday the availability of the AT-3724TR, a standalone Ethernet switch A device that connects clients and servers to each other in an Ethernet network. See switched Ethernet.  that provides a central point of connectivity for Allied-Telesyn's 3600 series of stackable hubs.

Equipped with 24 switched 10BASE-T ports and capable of storing more than 8,000 media-access control (MAC) addresses, it is designed for segment switching for small- to medium-sized networks. In combination with the 3600 stacks and an upcoming segmented backplane, the AT-3724TR is one of the most cost-effective switched workgroup solutions in the marketplace. The switch is backwards compatible See backward compatible.

The AT-3724TR utilizes twin RISC-based processors to increase performance by isolating and assigning switching tasks and management tasks to separate processors. It also includes a store and forward architecture to improve LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used.  and data integrity, and supports the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, New York, www.ieee.org) A membership organization that includes engineers, scientists and students in electronics and allied fields.  802.1 Spanning Tree protocol Based on an algorithm invented by Radia Perlman while working for Digital Equipment Corporation[1][2], Spanning Tree Protocol Is an OSI layer-2 protocol which ensures a loop free topology for any bridged LAN.  to eliminate endless network loops.

"The 3724 gives users a direct migration path to switched environments using their current 3600 series hubs," said Anders Swahn, senior vice president, marketing, Allied Telesyn. "Using the 3724 in conjunction with the 3600 hubs in a switched environment allows the network manager to view up to eight segmented hubs as a single icon on the SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) A widely used network monitoring and control protocol. Data are passed from SNMP agents, which are hardware and/or software processes reporting activity in each network device (hub, router, bridge, etc.  console, clearing up much of the clutter that micro-segmentation has created on net management."

Features

The AT-3724TR provides backbone connectivity for the 3600 series hubs. Each of the 24 ports acts as an independent Ethernet segment providing 10 Mbps of bandwidth per segment. A port-trunking feature allows up to eight ports to be grouped together to increase bandwidth to 80 Mbps between 3724 switches; the switch supports multiple trunk groups. Other features include:

* MAC Addresses - provides flexible application connections ranging from single workstations to multi-station segments based on its ability to support more than 8,000 MAC addresses.

* Store and Forward - ensures network and data integrity by identifying and preventing packet transmission errors from being propagated throughout the network; also buffers packets until network resources are available.

* Filtering - utilizes user-defined filtering to allow the LAN manager (1) A network operating system from Microsoft that runs as a server application under OS/2. It supports DOS, Windows and OS/2 clients. LAN Manager was superseded by Windows NT Server, and many parts of LAN Manager are used in Windows NT and 2000. See LAN Server.  to define the criteria by which packets will be screened by either bridge address table filters or port filters; filtering gathers statistics on a per-port basis, by MAC address or for the entire switch.

* IEEE 802.1d 802.1D is the IEEE MAC Bridges standard which includes Bridging, Spanning Tree, interworking for 802.11 and others. It is standardized by the IEEE 802.1 working group.

VLANs (virtual LANs) are not part of 802.1D, but specified in 802.1Q.
Spanning Tree Algorithm An algorithm used in transparent bridges that dynamically determines the best path from source to destination. It avoids bridge loops (two or more paths linking one segment to another), which can cause the bridges to misinterpret results.  - identifies redundant paths between spanning tree bridges to eliminate endless loops and designates one path as the primary path and assigns another as the secondary path to be activated in event of primary path failure.

* Network Management - includes built-in SNMP management and Telnet capability; will be supported by the entire line of AT-VIEW management tools; also supports MIB (1) (Management Information Base) The hierarchical database used by the simple network management protocol (SNMP) to describe the particular device being monitored. MIB objects are identified using ASN.1 syntax. See SNMP, RMON, OID and ASN.1.  II, 802.Id, 802.3m, and any SNMP-based network management system.

Company Background

Incorporated in 1987, Allied Telesyn International Corp. (ATI (ATI Technologies Inc., Markham Ontario, http://ati.amd.com) A leading manufacturer of graphics chips and display adapters. Founded in 1985 by K. Y. Ho, Benny Lau and Lee Lau, ATI chips and boards are widely used by OEMs. ) is a leading supplier of Ethernet products for local area networks (LANs). The industry's largest supplier of Ethernet media products such as transceivers and micro repeaters, ATI entered the market for interface cards and hubs in 1992. The company provides a component based "building block" approach to designing and implementing LANs. Revenues for ATI and its affiliates exceeded $180 million in 1994.

The company has development and manufacturing facilities in the U.S. and the Pacific Rim, including IC design capability that allows it to offer highly cost-effective and reliable products in the fast growing LAN market. ATI has affiliates in Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore, as well as subsidiaries in the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands.
