COLORADO SPRINGS Colorado Springs, city (1990 pop. 281,140), seat of El Paso co., central Colo., on Monument and Fountain creeks, at the foot of Pikes Peak; inc. 1886. It is a year-round resort and a booming military, technological, and commercial city. , Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 21, 2003

Intelliden Corporation, the intelligent networking company, today announced that Intelliden chief strategy officer John C. Strassner has authored a new book on policy-based network management (PBNM PBNM Policy Based Network Management ). The 516-page book, "Policy-Based Network Management: Solutions For the Next Generation" presents a new approach to PBNM that unites the business, system, and implementation spheres.

"John has once again pointed the way we must go on our journey to make IP networks into the tool we need them to be," said Craig Dupler, associate technical fellow -- network, Boeing Commercial Airplanes Boeing Commercial Airplanes is a unit of The Boeing Company, based in Renton, Washington consisting of the Seattle-based former Boeing Airplane Company (the civil airliner division), as well as the Long Beach-based Douglas Aircraft division of the former McDonnell Douglas . "He clearly describes both the value proposition for policy-based network management, and explains what we must do to realize that value."

PBNM systems enable business rules and procedures to be translated into policies that configure and control the network and its services. In the book, Strassner discusses architectural principles for PBNM and describes policy models. One model in particular, Directory Enabled Networks New Generation (DEN-ng), was specifically constructed to bind information and data models to management architectures. As networks become larger and more complex, creating policies for them has become a crucial step in the management of network systems.

"This is a must read for anyone seeking to understand policy-based automation in complex network environments," said Curtis Keliiaa, senior member of technical staff in telecommunication operations, Sandia National Laboratories Sandia National Laboratories, which is managed and operated by the Sandia Corporation (a wholly owned subsidiary of Lockheed Martin Corporation), is a major United States Department of Energy research and development national laboratory with two locations, one in Albuquerque, New . "It provides the reader with the essential knowledge needed to manage the increasing complexity of today's network management challenges. The corporate executive, technology architect, or technical practitioner will find this a most valuable resource for strategic planning Strategic planning is an organization's process of defining its strategy, or direction, and making decisions on allocating its resources to pursue this strategy, including its capital and people.  and tactical implementation."

"As one who believes the implementation of PBNMs is critical to the future growth of the network industry, I welcome the addition of this work," said Mike McLoughlin, consultant systems engineer, British Telecom The telephone and communications carrier that provides services in Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It used to be a division of the British Post Office, but was privatized in 1984 under Margaret Thatcher's administration. . "Policy management is fundamental for defining behavior and is a pre-requisite for autonomic computing," said Dale Hecht, Intelliden president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. "John's industry leadership is enabling Intelliden to build his standards-based policy vision into the Intelliden R-Series(TM) software solution for the benefit of customers and partners everywhere."

Strassner is the inventor of Directory Enabled Networks (DEN). He is a former Cisco fellow who was instrumental in setting the course for directory- and policy-enabled products and technologies within the industry. His first book, "Directory Enabled Networks," described DEN as a new paradigm New Paradigm
