The goal of the Alliance is to build on industry knowledge, industry standards, and open geospatial software technologies and services to facilitate the rapid deployment of location-based services (LBS (Location-Based Services) See mobile positioning. ), wireless, and Web-based solutions in the energy industry.

Solutions and standards that can be integrated with an existing GIS are a priority with the Alliance because they help safeguard sizable system investments by allowing enterprises to build on what they have rather than starting over. Industry compliance and the ability to respond quickly to new regulations are also important factors to the Alliance when adopting new technologies.

The Alliance will be supported by open solutions such as the IntelliWhere Genie solution, which is based on GeoMedia(R) technology, to deliver location-based services. Alliance members will also share their industry knowledge and success with open, geofacilities-centric technology implementations. In addition, service providers such as EWTS will support the Alliance with its ability to deliver solution-specific systems integration and implementation services.

Members energized by Alliance

"Creating this Alliance is a natural next step for Duke Energy to extend our geofacilities data from the desktop to the field," said Terry Rittenhour, director of Technical Services, Duke Energy Gas Transmission, LP. "We already have proven success with Intergraph's GeoMedia technology when managing disparate data and EWTS services for addressing our IT requirements. The Energy Technology Alliance provides a framework for us to further leverage our data using emerging technologies such as location-based services."

Lee Finniear, managing director of the IntelliWhere Division, comments, "We're excited to create this Alliance with Duke Energy, recognized as an early technology adopter and standard bearer an officer of an army, company, or troop, who bears a standard; - commonly called color sergeantor color bearer; hence, the leader of any organization; as, the standard bearer of a political party s>.

Alliance foresees benefits to industry

An additional benefit of the Alliance is that it will provide a forum for all energy providers to communicate common issues; influence industry standards, business workflows, and processes; and exploit new technologies whether their GIS is based on Autodesk, ESRI (Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc., Redlands, CA, www.esri.com) The world's leading developer of geographic information systems (GIS) software, including programs that plot ZIP codes and addresses, demographic information and detailed, color-coded data. , Intergraph, GE SmallWorld, or other vendor solutions. Companies in the gas, pipeline, and electric market sectors, as well as industry affiliates who want to explore new technology opportunities, may benefit from participating.
