IntelliCorp joins industry effort for standard Modeling Language.

Application development software vendors collaborate in response to Object Management Group request for proposal

IntelliCorp (Nasdaq: INAI) is collaborating with several other software companies to define a unified Modeling Language (UML). If accepted as a standard by the Object Management Group, the proposal will help remedy the current fragmentation of object modeling techniques in the marketplace.

IntelliCorp joins Microsoft Corp., Hewlett-Packard Co., Oracle Corp., Texas Instruments Software and others in endorsing the UML, a visual object modeling language developed at Rational Software Corp. The companies are expected to propose a version of UML jointly to the Object Management Group (OMG), in response to OMG's Object Analysis and Design Request for Proposal.

Jim Odell, co-chair of the UML task force, explains that developers need a standard interface to enable the myriad different CASE tools to talk to each other. A standard notation will enable people familiar with any methodology to use the new methodology that will be proposed to OMG; it will represent a common language for everybody to communicate...a ligua franca.

"All of these different CASE tool companies will not have to worry about competing notations, but can concentrate on value added. Competitors can interface as partners, taking advantage of each's strengths," says Odell.

The co-author with James Martin of the Object Oriented Information Engineering methodology, Odell is a consultant in business process modeling, and also serves as IntelliCorp's chief methodologist for OOIE.

OMG-compliant notations will have slight differences from existing proprietary products; but the vendors of those products will then be free from the development, support, and enhancement obligations brought by proprietary interfaces that essentially comprise a competitive disadvantage.
