Forty-five thousand copies of the "1999 Directory of Science Training Programs for Teachers and Students" are being distributed to both public and private schools across the nation. For the first time, an online version is also available at www.sciserv.org. Tracy Koon, Intel's director of corporate affairs, cited results from the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMMS TIMMS Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (formerly known as the Third International Mathematics and Science Study) TIMMS TMDE (Test, Measurement, and Diagnostic Equipment) Integrated Maintenance Management System ) as a call to action for Intel: "Today U.S. high school students are less prepared in science and math than their international counterparts. We know that improving science and math education is a key to keeping our nation competitive in this technologically advanced global economy. This new directory was one way Intel could provide practical help to increase student achievement in these vital areas." The directory began its life in 1982 as the "Directory of Student Science Training Programs for Pre-college Students," produced by Science Service and funded for many years by the National Science Foundation. The last printed edition of the directory appeared in 1994. This year, Intel provided the funding needed to update and improve this important resource publication, and for the first time, include listings of programs available for teachers. The student training programs offer advanced instruction and hands-on lab research in a wide range of scientific disciplines. Students gain valuable knowledge in a variety of scientific areas that they can apply to future education and careers. The teacher training programs provide professional development in the areas of science, engineering and mathematics, and the opportunity to learn specific problem-solving methods and instructional strategies. Part of a Larger Science Education Effort The funding of the directory is only one part of Intel's overall commitment to improving science, math and technology education. In 1997, Intel contributed close to $100 million to K-12 and higher education higher education Study beyond the level of secondary education. In addition, Intel sponsors two major science competitions managed by Science Service: The Intel Science Talent Search The Intel Science Talent Search (Intel STS) is a prestigious research-based science competition in the United States primarily for high school students. The Intel STS is administered by the Science Service, which began the competition in 1942 with Westinghouse; for many years, the and The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair is the largest pre-college scientific research event in the world.
