Intel and Comcast to Develop and Trial Home Connectivity Products.

Intel Corporation and Comcast Cable Communications, Inc. announced today that the two companies have agreed to develop, test and trial a set of home networking products, including a new residential broadband gateway, wireless network adapter and cable modem. A home network will enable Comcast customers to share a single broadband Internet connection, printers and drives, and transfer files between all the computers in and around their home.

Both companies have also agreed to develop and pursue joint marketing and promotional relationships to promote Comcast's broadband Internet service and Intel's Internet connectivity and home networking products.

The residential gateway will provide broadband connectivity to all the computers in a Comcast customer's home using multiple networking technologies, including Ethernet and 802.11b, a high-speed wireless networking specification. The gateway will include intelligent firewall and security software that provides another layer of protection for the always-on connection. The adapters will use the 11 Mbps. 802.11b specification to provide Comcast customers with a seamless, wireless networking solution from the enterprise to the home.

Comcast has also agreed to test and develop requirements for a CPE-controlled cable modem (CCCM). The CCCM modem will be designed to offer computer manufacturers greater flexibility and cost efficiencies than current cable modem products.
