Intel Awards Coveted Supplier Continuous Quality Improvement Award; Chip Maker Also Awards Preferred Quality Supplier Status to 16 Key Suppliers.

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 6, 1999--Intel Corporation today announced that it has awarded both its coveted Supplier Continuous Quality Improvement (SCQI) award and its Preferred Quality Supplier (PQS) award to United Van Lines and NEC Corporation 2nd LSI Memory Division. Intel also acknowledged 14 additional suppliers with its PQS award.

These awards acknowledge suppliers who possess the highest overall performance within Intel's critical supplier base. The additional PQS winners are Novellus Systems Inc., Sumitomo Sitix Silicon Inc., Wacker Siltronic, GE Industrial Systems, GEORGE FISCHER+GF+Piping Systems, Pulse, Amkor Technology and Anam Semiconductor, NTK Technical Ceramics, ChipPAC Inc., Amoco Electronic Materials, Dexter Electronic Materials, Shinko, Shin-Etsu Chemical Co. and Tanaka.

United Van Lines supplies transportation services for household goods, capital equipment and tradeshows. NEC supplies Pipeline Burst SRAM (PBSRAM) products. Novellus provides thin films deposition equipment and service. Sumitomo Sitix supplies polished and epitaxial silicon wafers. Wacker Siltronic supplies polished and epitaxial silicon wafers. GE provides electrical distribution equipment and controls. GEORGE FISCHER+GF+Piping Systems supplies piping systems for measurement, conveyance and control of high purity process fluids.

Pulse provides magnetic components for Intel networking, power and telecom applications. Amkor and Anam provide assembly and test contracting for semiconductor packages. NTK supplies ceramic and organic land grid array electronic packaging. ChipPAC supplies assembly/test contracting services for semiconductor packages. Amoco supplies Ball Grid Array (BGA) molding compound. Dexter supplies microelectronic encapsulant materials. Shinko provides organic substrates, cartridge enclosures, interposers, leadframes and subcontracting to Intel. Shin-Etsu provides electronic molding compound, underfill and thermal grease materials. Tanaka supplies wire (gold and aluminum).

To qualify for SCQI status, suppliers must attain 95 percent or better on a four-quarter report card, attain 90 percent performance against an aligned annual improvement plan, and finally, attain an overall score of 63 percent or more on the Standardized Supplier Quality Assessment (SSQA). SSQA is based on ISO 9000, Malcolm Baldrige and industry software quality criteria.

To qualify for PQS status, suppliers must attain 80 percent or better on a four-quarter report card, attain 80 percent performance against an aligned annual improvement plan, and finally, attain an overall score of 55 percent or more on the Standardized Supplier Quality Assessment (SSQA). SSQA is based on ISO 9000, Malcolm Baldrige and industry software quality criteria.

Intel recognizes PQS and SCQI winners with a full-page advertisement in the Wall Street Journal and an awards ceremony. Wall Street Journal ads will run in American editions on April 6 and in Asian editions April 8.

The SCQI and PQS awards are part of Intel's Supplier Continuous Quality Improvement (SCQI) process. The goal of this process is to encourage Intel's key suppliers to strive for excellence and continuous improvement.
