Intel's New Chip.


Intel has renamed its high-end chip, preliminarily named Williamette, as Pentium 4, which will be the successor to Intel's Pentium III The successor to the Pentium II from Intel. Introduced in the spring of 1999 at 500 MHz, the Pentium III architecture was similar to the Pentium II with the addition of 70 new instructions optimized for multimedia (see SSE).  microprocessor microprocessor, integrated circuit containing the arithmetic, logic, and control circuitry required to interpret and execute instructions from a computer program. . The speed of the new Pentium 4 chip has not yet been disclosed but Intel officials had previously indicated that it would operate at speeds of at least 1.4 gigahertz. The new chip will be marketed beginning in September 2000.
