Integrated Systems First to Ship Full Operating System Support for Motorola MPC860 PowerQUICC and MPC821 Families; Provides Exclusive Controller Solutions for High Performance Portable Communications and Networking Products.

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 31, 1996--Integrated Systems, Inc. today announced it is the first real-time Operating System (RTOS) vendor to ship full operating system support and application cross-development tools for the Motorola MPC860 PowerQUICC and MPC821 families.

The latest version of PowerPC pSOSystem (rel. 2.1.1) provides drivers to initialize and use the MPC8XX family's enhanced functionality via Board Support Packages (BSPs) for the Questra 821 and Motorola ADS reference boards. Functionality includes the ability to use integral ethernet port and to set up and use multiple asynchronous and synchronous serial ports for PPP, HDLC and advanced communication protocols such as ISDN, X.25, Frame Relay and ATM.

pSOSystem Architecture

ISI provides the pSOSystem real-time operating system and pRISM integrated cross development environment for designers of high performance embedded systems. The services provided by the pSOSystem environment include a scalable, component based architecture centered on the pSOS+ real-time kernel, fault tolerant multiprocessor support, file management services including support for MS-DOS, CD-ROM, NFS and real-time file systems, dynamic loader, ZeroCopy TCP/IP networking support, SNMP and other connectivity facilities -- all designed to be hardware independent. Sophisticated integrated development and debugging tools are available for C and C++, including industry unique system and task level debug modes and a visual analyzer and debug tool.

PowerPC Support

The pSOSystem product family for PowerPC includes both the pRISM IDE (integrated development environment), and the pSOS+ embedded real-time operating system supports the Motorola MPC860, MPC821 and PowerPC 600 families from Motorola and the IBM PowerPC 400 CPU family for both custom embedded designs and as preconfigured systems for a number of commercial reference platforms.

For processor reference platforms, such as the Questra and ADS boards, ISI provides pre-configured board support packages (BSPs), including any pSOSystem device drivers such as the multichannel serial, ethernet, memory and SCSI drivers that support the PowerQUICC CPU features. All pSOSystem BSPs are provided in source, enabling developers to prototype, or test, on commercial reference boards while migrating to custom embedded designs. ISI also maintains a library of additional device drivers that support popular peripheral chips for further flexibility. Supported reference platforms include Motorola MVME 1603/1604; Motorola Ultra/Atlas; Motorola MPC860 PowerQUICC ADS; Motorola MPC821 ADS; IBM 403; Questra 821; and soon the EST 860/821.

Motorola MPC860 PowerQUICC Family

The PowerQUICC family integrates a PowerPC core with high performance, low power peripherals as a one-chip integrated microprocessor for a variety of consumer and high end communications and networking products. The PowerQUICC, like the popular 68360 QUICC, uses a dual processor architecture. A Communication Processor Module off loads peripheral tasks such as serial communications, ethernet and HDLC framing for the PPC core.

Motorola's MPC860 PowerQUICC includes: four serial communication controllers (SCC) that can support Ethernet, HDLC, IrDA, PPP, other forms of sync or async serial communications; a PCMCI master controller; a flexible memory interface and an integral parallel port.

Motorola MPC821 Family

Motorola's MPC821 PowerPC family has been optimized for minimum power consumption. The MPC821 microprocessor delivers approximately 33 MIPS at 225 MHz while consuming only 180 mW. The microprocessor also supports embedded DSP, that can sustain one 16 x 16 multiply and accumulate every clock cycle. This provides superior execution of compute-intensive algorithms found in modem software, handwriting and speech recognition and image processing.

Motorola's MPC821 microprocessor includes two SCCs that can support IrDA, Ethernet and other forms of synchronous and asynchronous serial communications, a PCMCIA master controller; a flexible memory interface and a 256-color LCD controller.
