Integral Peripherals announces new capacity point in its rugged 1.8-inch Viper family of PCMCIA cards.BOULDER Boulder, city, United States Boulder, city (1990 pop. 83,312), seat of Boulder co., N central Colo.; inc. 1871. A Rocky Mountain resort and a suburb of Denver, it is the seat of the Univ. of Colorado (1876). , Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 19, 1997--Integral Peripherals Inc., the leading manufacturer of 1.8-inch hard drives, announced today the introduction of the Viper(TM) 8085E. Like the Viper 170E & 340PA PC Cards, the Viper 8085E will provide end users with a complete, removable storage product. The Viper 8085E is ideal for primary and secondary data storage requirements at a compelling price point in comparison with solid state storage alternatives. Targeted for new emerging applications like car PC systems, digital cameras, network printers and entertainment systems, the Viper 8085E offers a compact 85 MB solution with a manufacturer's suggested price less than $220. The Viper series features low power consumption with the highest shock performance available in the market. Designed specifically for PCMCIA (Personal Computer Memory Card International Association, San Jose, CA, www.pcmcia.org) An international standards body and trade association that was founded in 1989 to establish a standard for connecting peripherals to portable computers. PCMCIA created the PC Card. See PC Card. applications, all of Integral's drives offer patented technologies such as dynamic head loading which ensures that the read/write heads A device that reads (senses) and writes (records) data on a magnetic disk or tape. For writing, the surface of the disk or tape is moved past the read/write head. By discharging electrical impulses at the appropriate times, bits are recorded as tiny, magnetized spots of positive or never come in contact with the disk surface, thus eliminating failures due to head slap and stiction (STatic frICTION) A type of hard disk failure in which the read/write heads stick to the platters. The lubricant used on certain drives heats up and liquifies. When the disk is turned off, it cools down and can become like a glue. . Integral parks the heads safely off the media on loading ramps whenever the drive is powered down or not in an active mode. When the drive starts up, the heads remain on the ramps until flying speed is reached. The heads are then launched off the ramp onto an established air bearing. This results in the most reliable and rugged PCMCIA hard drives available today. Integral pioneered the introduction of dynamic head loading in September September: see month. 1991 when the first Integral 1.8-inch hard drive was delivered to the mobile market. Integral is currently accepting appointments with customers for showings at Computex Taipei COMPUTEX Taipei, or Taipei International Information Technology Show (Traditional Chinese: 台北國際電腦展 '97 (June 3-7 in Taiwan). Integral will be hosting a suite at the Hyatt during the week-long show.
