Integral Peripherals Announces 4.09 GB 3.0 inch Hard Disk Drive.

BOULDER Boulder, city, United States
Boulder, city (1990 pop. 83,312), seat of Boulder co., N central Colo.; inc. 1871. A Rocky Mountain resort and a suburb of Denver, it is the seat of the Univ. of Colorado (1876).
, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 10, 1997--Integral Peripherals Inc., a leading supplier of mobile hard disk drives, announced today the following additions to its range of mobile storage products: the Silhouette silhouette (sĭl'ĕt`), outline image, especially a profile drawing solidly filled in or a cutout pasted against a lighter background.  33250(TM) and the Silhouette 34090(TM), offering an unsurpassed 3.2 GB and 4.09 GB of storage in a 3.0 inch, 10.5mm z-height disk drive, which is the highest capacity 3.0 inch hard disk drive announced to date.

Integral's new Silhouette offerings continue to set the pace for increased mobile storage for the portable computing computing - computer  market, providing computer manufacturers with lightweight, low profile hard drives which are ideal for today's demanding notebook computer A laptop computer that weighs in a range from five to seven pounds. The term originated when laptops were routinely more than 10 pounds, and those that became lighter were placed in a special "notebook" category. In practice, notebook computer and laptop computer are synonymous.  buyers.

The Silhouette 33250 and Silhouette 34090 offer high performance with a media transfer rate of up to 17.75 MB per second and an average seek of 13 milliseconds. The Silhouette family of 3.0 inch hard disk drives feature Integral's dynamic head loading. First pioneered by Integral 7 years ago, this unique technology ensures that the heads are parked safely off the disk surface when in non-operating mode, virtually eliminating the possibility of disk contact and stiction (STatic frICTION) A type of hard disk failure in which the read/write heads stick to the platters. The lubricant used on certain drives heats up and liquifies. When the disk is turned off, it cools down and can become like a glue. , while providing high tolerance to physical shock. Integral's patented MicroGlide(TM) technology, used in conjunction with dynamic head loading, enables the use of super polished (non-textured) recording media, allowing recording head flying heights of 1.5 micro-inches, resulting in areal densities The number of bits per square inch of storage surface. It typically refers to disk drives, where the number of bits per inch (bpi) times the number of tracks per inch (tpi) yields the areal density.  of 1760 Mb/sq.in. and capacities of 2GB per 3.0 inch disk platter One of the disks in a hard disk drive. Each platter provides a top and bottom recording surface. There may be only one or several platters in a drive with each platter having its own pair of read/write heads. See magnetic disk. .

"In order for 3.0 inch disk drives to be more widely accepted, they must offer a wider range of capacity points" said Crawford Del Prete, vice president of storage research, IDC. "Integral's new Silhouette drives expand the number of 2GB+ solutions available for mobile systems OEM's."

Integral Peripherals manufactures and markets the Viper and Silhouette families of small form factor disk drives, which are used as primary data storage in a wide range of mobile computing Using a computing device while in transit. Mobile computing implies wireless transmission, but wireless transmission does not necessarily imply mobile computing.
