access company, today announced enhanced DSL capabilities for the PurePacket platform at DSLcon '00 Fall. PurePacket is the first packet-based multi-service access system that brings MPLS (Multi Protocol Label Switching (networking) label switching - A routing technique that uses information from existing IP routing protocols to identify IP datagrams with labels and forwards them to a modified switch or router, which then uses the labels to switch the datagrams through the network. ) and routing intelligence to DSL access networks, and dynamically provisions resources for delivering voice, video, tiered data and Virtual Private Network (VPN (Virtual Private Network) A private network that is configured within a public network (a carrier's network or the Internet) in order to take advantage of the economies of scale and management facilities of large networks. ) services. By combining the functionality of a voice gateway, DSL Access Multiplexer (DSLAM (DSL Access Multiplexor) A central office (CO) device for ADSL service that intermixes voice traffic and DSL traffic onto a customer's DSL line. It also separates incoming phone and data signals and directs them onto the appropriate carrier's network. ), and Digital Cross Connect in one platform, PurePacket allows network operators to deploy a single, cost effective and easy to manage IP-based access network for delivering all services over DSL access lines. PurePacket, which supports both the Media Gateway Control Protocol (MGCP See MGCP/MEGACO.

MGCP - Media Gateway Control Protocol
) and GR-303 standards, is the only access network solution that allows carriers to hand off DSL voice calls to new generation softswitches and legacy circuit switches. Integral Access will demonstrate the PurePacket platform at DSLcon Booth 441.

Unlike current DSL systems that are based on ATM, PurePacket has been designed to seamlessly integrate with the emerging converged IP public core network. PurePacket eliminates the need for carriers to manage separate ATM and IP networks, and enables more efficient utilization of bandwidth on DSL links for transporting IP based services. In addition, PurePacket places intelligent MPLS Routing close to the customer so that network resources can be dynamically provisioned based on the grade of service and traffic contract assigned to individual IP and legacy applications running over DSL access networks. PurePacket makes it possible to provision predictable Quality of Service (QoS) that stretches from the customer premise and across predominantly MPLS-based core networks.

"With the dominance of IP traffic at the customer premise and in the core of the network, and the accelerating adoption of softswitch technology, deploying ATM in the access network is not a long term solution," said Guy Chenard, vice president, marketing and business development, Integral Access. "PurePacket provides carriers with a complete access network solution that supports all services over DSL, integrates with legacy and softswitch voice infrastructures, and provides a smooth migration path to the new converged IP public network."

Integrated Voice Services

Unlike traditional DSL solutions that require the addition of a voice gateway to support voice services, PurePacket provides built in voice capability. In addition, PurePacket eliminates the need for carriers to invest in costly Class 5 circuit switches for delivering basic voice services. By supporting the MGCP standard, PurePacket inter-operates with IP-based softswitches to allow network operators to provision and offer new voice services, PBX (Private Branch eXchange) An inhouse telephone switching system that interconnects telephone extensions to each other as well as to the outside telephone network (PSTN).  interworking (standard) interworking - Systems or components, possibly from different origins, working together to perform some task. Interworking depends crucially on standards to define the interfaces between the components. , as well as Custom Local Area Signaling System (CLASS) features, such as call forwarding, call waiting, etc., over DSL access networks. This unique capability enables carriers to create new call features and services more quickly and easily than possible with ATM and TDM (Time Division Multiplexing) A technology that transmits multiple signals simultaneously over a single transmission path. Each lower-speed signal is time sliced into one high-speed transmission.  solutions.

The addition of MGCP complements PurePacket's existing support for GR-303, and allows network operators to deliver voice services over existing TDM infrastructures and new generation VoIP core networks - without replacing any equipment. This capability provides facilities-based competitive carriers with a simple migration path from circuit switched to IP centric networks.

Intelligent MPLS Routing for Dynamic Provisioning

PurePacket is the first multi-service access platform that uses Intelligent MPLS routing to create and assign differentiated service levels to specific applications over DSL links. By deploying MPLS routing functionality at the edge of DSL access networks, PurePacket can make traffic management decisions locally and dynamically provision network resources to support specified Service Level Agreements (SLAs) for individual services and applications. In contrast, ATM-based access solutions lack local routing functionality and can only offer static resource provisioning. To help ensure the profitability of DSL services, the PurePacket OMS OMS - Opportunity Management System (TM) (Operations Management System) enables network operators to manage SLAs and gather traffic records for billing.

PurePacket Architecture

PurePacket uses an MPLS-based architecture to route, transport and switch voice and data transmissions in packet format, and supports the GR-303 and MGCP standards for integration with new generation IP-based networks, as well as traditional circuit switched infrastructures. This is a complete access network solution that is composed of:

-- PurePacket OUTburst(R)customer premise equipment for small-medium business (SMB (1) (Small to Medium-sized Business) Also called "SME" (small to medium-sized enterprise), it refers to companies that are larger than the small office/home office (SOHO), but not huge. ) and small office/home office See SOHO.  (SOHO Soho (sōhō`, sə–), district of Westminster, London, England, known for its continental restaurants. Once a fashionable quarter, it became popular among writers and artists in the 19th cent. ) environments

-- PurePacket Node(TM)central office aggregation devices for central office, co-locations, points of presence, and multi-dwelling units

-- PurePacket OMS(TM)(Operations Management System) for network control and services management

Pricing and Availability

The PurePacket Platform is available immediately. The entry-level configuration of a PurePacket Node is less than $15,000. OUTburst-SB customer premise equipment is less than $2000. Entry-level SOHO customer premise devices are available for less than $1000.
