Institute of Computing Technology of Chinese Academy of Sciences Selects Mentor Emulator as Verification Platform for Goodson Series CPU Chips.

WILSONVILLE, Ore. -- Mentor Graphics Mentor Graphics, Inc (NASDAQ: MENT) is a US-based multinational corporation dealing in electronic design automation (EDA) for electrical engineering and electronics, as of 2004, ranked third in the EDA industry it helped create.  Corp. (Nasdaq:MENT) today announced that the Institute of Computing Technology (ICT (1) (Information and Communications Technology) An umbrella term for the information technology field. See IT.

(2) (International Computers and Tabulators) See ICL.

) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) (Simplified Chinese: 中国科学院; Pinyin: Zhōngguó Kēxuéyuàn), formerly known as Academia Sinica  has selected the VStation(TM)PRO emulation system as its accelerated verification platform for its Goodson series central processing unit See CPU.

(architecture, processor) central processing unit - (CPU, processor) The part of a computer which controls all the other parts. Designs vary widely but the CPU generally consists of the control unit, the arithmetic and logic unit (ALU), registers, temporary buffers

The Goodson series CPU design CPU design is the design engineering task of producing a CPU, a component of computer hardware. It is a subfield of electronics engineering and computer engineering. Overview
CPU design focuses on these areas:
  1. Datapaths (such as ALUs and pipelines)
is comprised of 32-bit integer and 64-bit floating point functions with performance of 200MIPS (Million Instructions Per Second) The execution speed of a computer. For example, .5 MIPS is 500,000 instructions per second; 100 MIPS is a hundred million instructions per second.  at up to 266MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc.  clock frequency. Since its functionality is complicated, complete functional verification Functional verification, in electronic design automation, is the task of verifying that the logic design conforms to specification. In everyday terms, functional verification attempts to answer the question "Does this proposed design do what is intended?" This is a complex task,  for such chips can require several months. The VStationPRO emulator provides RTL (Register Transfer Level) A high-level hardware description language (HDL) for defining digital circuits. The circuits are described as a collection of registers, Boolean equations, control logic such as "if-then-else" statements as well as complex event sequences;  or gate-level verification for designs up to 120 million gates and is widely used for the functional verification of complex system designs such as CPUs, image processors and multi-media/communications system-on-chips (SoCs).

"With the great help of Mentor's advanced VStationPRO verification system, ICT will be able to slash verification time and supply its customers with fully verified Goodson CPUs in a short time period, which will accelerate its adoption," said Mr. Tang Zhimin, the technical principal of the Goodson chip project at the Institute of Computing Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The VStationPRO emulator is the Mentor Emulation Division's sixth-generation VStation product family and provides the high performance and capacity required for such applications as hardware/software co-verification, accelerated verification, direct code verification and in-circuit emulation (ICE). Complex system design verification can be greatly shortened while ensuring highest function coverage with the VStation solution, with emulation speed thousands of times faster than other methodologies. The VStation system was used to reduce verification time for the Goodson CPU design.

"ICT selected the VStationPRO emulator as its Goodson series CPU functional verification platform because of Mentor's advanced technology and excellent support," said Danny Perng, general manager, Mentor Graphics China. "We are pleased that our most advanced emulation platform will contribute to the success of the Goodson series chip design and verification flow."

The Institute of Computing Technology of the Chinese Academy of

Sciences

Founded in 1956, the Institute of Computing Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (ICT-CAS) is the first academic institution specializing in the comprehensive research of computer science and technology. China's first general-purpose digital electronic computer was created at ICT-CAS, which later became a research and development base for high-performance computers. It is also the birthplace of the first high-performance general-purpose CPU chip.

At present, there are six research labs, one engineering center, and several incubated high-tech companies at ICT-CAS, hence, forming a well-coordinated system of scientific research and commercialization. The major research areas at ICT-CAS are CPU and SoC design, high-performance computing and grid computing, network and digitalization digitalization /dig·i·tal·iza·tion/ (dij?i-tal-i-za´shun) the administration of digitalis or one of its glycosides in a dosage schedule designed to produce and then maintain optimal therapeutic concentrations of its cardiotonic  technologies, information processing, and intellectualized Internet software. About the Goodson Chip Central Processing Unit (CPU)

The "Goodson Chip No. 1" is the first commercial general-purpose CPU chip designed independently by China with self-owned intellectual property rights. The CPU has 32-bit integer unit and 64-bit double precision floating point unit that meet the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, New York, www.ieee.org) A membership organization that includes engineers, scientists and students in electronics and allied fields. 754 standard. "Goodson Chip No. 1" is designed and manufactured with 0.18um technology, with up to 266MHz maximum clock frequency and top calculation speeds for both integer and floating point exceeding 200MOPS. The chip has passed high/low temperature loop test and reaches industrial application standards. With respect to operating system (OS) software, the Goodson Chip also supports popular international operating systems such as Linux, VxWorks and China's "Hopen (Creation Goddess of China)" embedded OS, making the Goodson Chip suitable for embedded system applications.
