5.5 Professional Designed for Enterprisewide Software Installation

InstallShield(R) Software Corp. announces the availability of InstallShield(R) 5.5 Professional.

This latest version of the company's industry-leading installation development system includes a rich feature set of enhancements designed for easier enterprise and large-scale software deployment Software deployment is all of the activities that make a software system available for use.

The general deployment process consists of several interrelated activities with possible transitions between them.
. InstallShield 5.5 Professional is designed to help application developers create powerful and reliable installations quickly and easily, as well as to assist network administrators to deploy enterprise-level Microsoft(R) Windows(R) applications.

Microsoft developers used features now included in InstallShield 5.5 Professional to create the installation packages for Microsoft(R) SQL Server An earlier relational DBMS from Sybase and from Microsoft. Sybase introduced SQL Server in 1988 for various Unix versions. In that same year, with help from IBM, Sybase created an OS/2 version that Microsoft licensed and branded as Microsoft SQL Server. (TM) 7.0.

New and Enhanced Features in InstallShield 5.5 Professional

InstallShield 5.5 Professional includes a number of feature enhancements designed to simplify installation development for large-scale projects:

     -- Dynamic File Linking -- allows build engineers to add files to
     their projects at build-time using wild card characters, registry
     entries, and environment variables, letting them build
     applications developed by large workgroups without any knowledge
     of the specific files needed.

     -- InstallShield Application Repackager -- automatically
     repackages one or more existing installations as an InstallShield
     Professional project, giving network administrators the ability
     to repackage multiple applications into a single installation for
     easy deployment.

     -- Maximum Distribution Options -- are available for even the
     largest installation projects -- one or more CD-ROMs or custom
     sizes up to 4 GB, with files compressed or uncompressed on a
     component-by-component basis.

     -- Enhanced InstallFromTheWeb(TM) and PackageForTheWeb(TM)
     Integration -- let developers quickly create installations for
     Internet distribution by launching InstallShield's Web
     distribution tools from the IDE and automatically importing
     project information.

     -- Advanced Media Building Technology -- offers the complete
     control to modify new and existing builds on a file-by-file
     basis.

     -- InstallShield Cabinet File Viewer and InstallShield Log File
     Viewer -- allow test engineers to view the contents of the
     project builds and log files.

     -- Direct Build -- rebuilds existing projects with a single mouse
     click.

     -- An Enhanced Microsoft(R)Visual Basic(TM)Project Wizard --
     creates a complete VB 6.0 or VB 5.0 installation in four easy
     steps.

     -- New Templates -- make it easy to create installations for
     common Windows technologies, including ODBC 3.5, BDE 5.0,
     PowerBuilder 6.0 and Access 97.
