Installing Bonjour for Windows.

About Bonjour

Bonjour also known as zero-configuration networking, enables the automatic discovery of computers, devices, and services on IP networks. Bonjour uses industry standard IP protocols to allow devices to automatically discover each other without the need to enter IP addresses or configure DNS servers.

System requirements To be used efficiently, all computer software needs certain hardware components or other software resources to be present on a computer system. These pre-requisites are known as (computer) system requirements and are often used as a guideline as opposed to an absolute rule.

Bonjour requires Windows 2000/2003 or Windows XP The previous client version of Windows. XP was a major upgrade to the client version of Windows 2000 with numerous changes to the user interface. XP improved support for gaming, digital photography, instant messaging, wireless networking and sharing connections to the Internet.  Make sure you have the latest Service Pack installed for your computer using Windows Update. Bonjour is a networking protocol that sends and receives network packets on UDP UDP (uridine diphosphate): see uracil.

(User Datagram Protocol) A protocol within the TCP/IP protocol suite that is used in place of TCP when a reliable delivery is not required.
port 5353. If you have a firewall enabled, you will need to that UDP port 5353 is open for Bonjour to work correctly. Certain firewalls will only partially block Bonjour packets, so if you experience intermittent behavior, check the flrewall settings and verify that Bonjour is listed as an exception and is allowed to receive incoming connections Bonjour will configure the Windows firewall appropriately during installation on Windows XP Service Pack 2 and above.

 instructions.

After installing Bonjour, you must restart the computer to use the Internet Explorer plugin.

If Java is not present at the time of installation and you decide to install Java at a later date, you will need to do a Repair install of Bonjour for Windows in order to get the proper Java Bonjour libraries. To do a Repair install, go to the "Add or Remove Programs" Control Panel, select Bonjour from the list and click "Change/Remove". Then choose "Repair" and follow the onscreen instructions.

What's included

Bonjour for Windows includes a plugin to discover advertised HTTP servers using Internet Explorer. Click the Bonjour icon in the Internet Explorer toolbar A row or column of on-screen buttons used to activate functions in the application. Many toolbars are customizable, letting you add and delete buttons as required. Toolbars may be fixed in position or may float, which means they can be dragged to a more convenient location in the  to enable Bonjour browsing. The Bonjour Printer Wizard is also included and allows Windows computers to print to Bonjour networked printers, including USB USB

Type of serial bus that allows peripheral devices (disks, modems, printers, digitizers, data gloves, etc.) to be easily connected to a computer.
shared printers connected to the Airport Extreme and Airport Express Base Stations. Since Apple first launched Bonjour in 2002, every major maker of network printers has adopted Bonjour. With the Bonjour Printer Wizard, computers using Windows can also experience the benefits of effortlessly discovering and printing to these Bonjour printers.

Known Issues

A small number of Virtual Private Network (VPN (Virtual Private Network) A private network that is configured within a public network (a carrier's network or the Internet) in order to take advantage of the economies of scale and management facilities of large networks. ) clients interfere with Bonjour. If you find that you can no longer discover network services or print to Bonjour shared printers, try logging out of VPN.

The Bonjour Printer Wizard will only discover printers being shared by the Mac OS X "Printer Sharing" feature when the Macintosh is running Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger or later.

More information

Bonjour is commonly installed by third-party software to provide zero-configuration networking capabilities to various applications. If your version of Bonjour does not include the IE plugin or Printer Wizard mentioned above, and you would like these features, you can download the complete Bonjour for Windows package from Apple's web site by visiting http://www.apple.com.macosx/features/bonjour

Developers can download the Bonjour SDK (Software Developer's Kit) See developer's toolkit and Windows SDK.

Bonjour (protocol)

Bonjour, formerly Rendezvous, is Apple's trade name for its implementation ofthe IETF See Internet Engineering Task Force.

IETF - Internet Engineering Task Force
Zeroconf protocol a computer network technology used in Apples Mac OS X from version 10.2 onwards. It uses standard DNS (Domain Name System) A system for converting host names and domain names into IP addresses on the Internet or on local networks that use the TCP/IP protocol. For example, when a Web site address is given to the DNS either by typing a URL in a browser or behind the  packets in a new way. Thus it is a new service, but it is using a technology that is relatively old--DNS over IP.

Bonjour is a general method to discover services on a local area network. This technology is widely used throughout Mac OS X and allows users to set up a network without any configuration. Currently it is used by Mac OS X to find printers and file sharing servers. It is also used by iTunes to find shared music, iPhoto to find shared photos, iChat to find other local iChat users, TiVo Desktop to find digital video recorders, and SubEthaEdit to find document collaborators. Additionally it is used by Safari to find local web servers and configuration pages for local devices, and the Gizmo Project SIP client to find other Gizmo Slang for any hardware device. See gadget.  users on the local subnet (SUBNETwork) A logical division of a local area network, which is created to improve performance and provide security. To enhance performance, subnets limit the number of nodes that compete for available bandwidth. .

Without special DNS configuration, Bonjour only works on a single subnet, which is usually a small area.

Bonjour is sometimes misunderstood to make services on a personal computer (for instance, file sharing) available to the public Intemet which could be considered a security risk. In fact, Bonjour does not provide any extra access to services; it merely advertises them. For example, a user can browse a list of nearby computers which share files-Bonjour on these computers has told him that the service is available-but he must still provide a password to access any protected files on these machines. Additionally, Bonjour works only in a close range; by default, its messages only reach users of the same subnet, Thus, the only security impact of Bonjou is that advertised services are no longer protected by security through obscurity (security) security through obscurity - Or "security by obscurity". A term applied by hackers to most operating system vendors' favourite way of coping with security holes - namely, ignoring them, documenting neither any known holes nor the underlying security algorithms, trusting  within the local subnet. If the services are protected through a means other than obscurity, they will remain protected.

Rendezvous was renamed Bonjour with the release of Mac OS X v 10.4 due to a 2004 settlement between Apple and Tiboo Software Inc. Tibco already marketed a product with the name Rendezvous. It was widely rumoured in 2004 that the new name would be Open Talk, but this name was not picked (possibly due to the similarities to LocaTalk and PowerTalk).

Bonjour services are largely implemented at the application level using standard TCP/IP TCP/IP

calls, rather than in the operating system. Although Mac OS X provides various Bonjour services, Mac OS X is not actually required to use Bonjour. Apple has made the source code of the Bonjour multicast DNS responder, the core component of service discovery, available as a Darwin open source project. The project provides source code to build the responder daemon for a wide range of platforms, including Mac OS 9, Mac OS X, Linux, *BSD (Berkeley Software Distribution) The software distribution facility of the Computer Systems Research Group (CSRG) of the University of California at Berkeley. , Solaris, VxWorks, and Windows. In addition, Apple provides a user-installable set of services called Bonjour for Windows (http://www.apple.com/bonjour/).

Bonjour can also be utilized by third party Instant Messaging clients such as Cerulean ce·ru·le·an
