Yerxa, Ph.D., Senior Vice President, Discovery at Inspire, received the Southeastern Region American Chemical Society The American Chemical Society (ACS) is a learned society (professional association) based in the United States that supports scientific inquiry in the field of chemistry. Founded in 1876 at New York University, the ACS currently has over 160,000 members at all degree-levels and in  (ACS (Asynchronous Communications Server) See network access server. ) Industrial Innovation Award for discoveries related to his work with P2Y2 receptors.

Specifically, ACS noted that Dr. Yerxa was recognized for his work in identifying the role that P2Y2 receptors play in tear secretion. He helped design and synthesize P2Y2 receptor agonists, including diquafosol tetrasodium for the treatment of dry eye, and led the development of this program through to its current stage. Dr. Yerxa is the lead inventor on four patents related to diquafosol tetrasodium composition and is named in 15 of Inspire's issued U.S. patents.

Dr. Yerxa has served as Senior Vice President, Discovery since March 2003. He joined Inspire in August 1995 and has held several positions, including Vice President, Discovery and Senior Director of Preclinical Programs prior to his current appointment. He supervises the Chemistry, Biology and Intellectual Property teams, and all drug discovery and early preclinical development activities. Dr. Yerxa received his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from the University of California The University of California has a combined student body of more than 191,000 students, over 1,340,000 living alumni, and a combined systemwide and campus endowment of just over $7.3 billion (8th largest in the United States). , Irvine in 1993.
