Insignia Ships First Java Virtual Machine Integrated Into Microsoft's Pocket Internet Explorer.Business Editors/High-Tech Writers FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 31, 2001 Jeode EVM Plug-in Enables Pocket PCs to Execute Java Applets Within Pocket Internet Explorer A version of Microsoft Internet Explorer for the Pocket PC operating system. Browser Environment Insignia Solutions(R) (Nasdaq:INSG INSG International Nickel Study Group ), the leading provider of accelerated Java(TM) software solutions for information appliances, announced today the immediate availability of the first Java virtual machine A Java interpreter. The Java Virtual Machine (JVM) is software that converts the Java intermediate language (bytecode) into machine language and executes it. The original JVM came from the JavaSoft division of Sun. (JVM) that is integrated into the Microsoft Pocket Internet Explorer. The Jeode(TM) EVM(TM) can now be incorporated in Windows Powered Pocket PCs as the plug-in that executes PersonalJava-compliant applets within the Pocket IE browser environment. Last year, Insignia was also the first company to provide a JVM plug-in for Microsoft's Internet Explorer 4.0 for Windows CE-based devices. Jeode plug-in technology has been deployed in a variety of these types of products including the Siemens SIMpad SL4, Compaq iPAQ Home Internet Appliance IA-1 and IA-2, eMachines MSN Companion, Olivetti Lexikon Linea@ webphone and Wyse Winterm Windows-based terminals. Since that time, Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq:MSFT MSFT Microsoft (stock symbol) MSFT Movimento Sociale Fiamma Tricolore (Italy) MSFT Multi-Stage Fitness Test MSFT Master of Science in Family Therapy MSFT Macalester Students for Fair Trade ) introduced the Pocket PC platform, which has proven very popular with shipments recently surpassing one million units. A full-featured Web browser -- optimized for the small screen, pen-entry environment of the Pocket PC -- was required, so Microsoft developed Pocket IE. Pocket PC users require a Java Virtual Machine in their devices in order to run Java applications, play Java-based games and execute the many Java applets available over the World Wide Web, such as chat, personalized news tracking, real-time stock quotes and sports headlines, financial calculators and other dynamic content. They expect to be able to run these applets within the Pocket IE browser environment. "We've seen great interest from Pocket PC developers in adding Java functionality to their products," said Richard Noling, president and chief executive officer of Insignia Solutions. "By becoming the first company to provide consumers with the ability to execute Java applets within the Pocket IE browser, we have taken another important step in making our accelerated Java technology the de facto standard Hardware or software that is widely used, but not endorsed by a standards organization. Contrast with de jure standard. de facto standard - A widespread consensus on a particular product or protocol which has not been ratified by any official standards body, such as ISO, for information appliances." Jeode Platform The Jeode platform is an accelerated implementation of the Sun Microsystems' (Nasdaq:SUNW SUNW Sun Microsystems, Inc (former stock symbol; now JAVA) SUNW Stanford University Network Workstation (Sun Microsystems, Inc) ) PersonalJava(TM) and EmbeddedJava(TM) specifications tailored for information appliances. At the core of the Jeode platform is the first independently developed "Sun Authorized Virtual Machine," the Jeode Embedded Virtual Machine(TM) (EVM(TM)), an accelerated runtime engine that delivers an optimal balance of performance and responsiveness in a smaller memory footprint. Using a proprietary technique called dynamic adaptive compilation (DAC See D/A converter and discretionary access control. DAC - Digital to Analog Converter (TM)), the Jeode EVM can execute Java applications on average six times faster than interpretive JVMs in roughly the same amount of memory. Key attributes include:
-- A full-featured software implementation compatible with Sun's
PersonalJava and EmbeddedJava(TM) specifications
-- Industry leading accelerated performance and efficient memory
utilization
-- Configurability and tunability to meet the diverse needs of
information appliance developers
-- A turn-key software solution already ported and tested on
popular RTOS/processor combinations
-- World class support, training, consulting, customization and
development tools
The Jeode platform is designed to run with a wide range of operating systems and target processors. It currently supports operating systems such as Windows CE, Windows NT 4, VxWorks, Linux, ITRON ITRON International Tidal Wetland Rice Observational Nursery ITRON Industrial The Real-time Operation Nucleus , Nucleus, BSDI BSDI - Berkeley Software Design, Inc. Unix and pSOS, and processors such as MIPS (Million Instructions Per Second) The execution speed of a computer.
