Insightful reflections on the 3rd International Feminist Dialogues (2007)/Reflexions pleines d'inspiration sur la 3eme edition International des Dialogues Femninistes (2007).'Another world will not be possible without another conception of democracy. And another democracy is only possible through a process of personal and subjective revolutions, of men and women, with an active recognition of diversity, taking on the intersectionalities of struggles as a collective challenge.' (FD 2007 background note). The feminist agenda within the World Social Forum (WSF WSF World Social Forum WSF Web Services Framework WSF Women's Sports Foundation WSF World Squash Federation WSF Washington State Ferry WSF Wake Shield Facility (space laboratory) WSF Water-Soluble Fraction ) has been to try and bring in what Virginia Vargas, a Peruvian feminist leader and writer calls, cultural subversion. The aim is to include gender equality and sexuality as an integral component of the agenda of the broader movement for social and economic justice. In other words Adv. 1. in other words - otherwise stated; "in other words, we are broke" put differently for the WSF to understand the impact of neoliberalism ne·o·lib·er·al·ism n. A political movement beginning in the 1960s that blends traditional liberal concerns for social justice with an emphasis on economic growth. ne , not only in relation to social and economic rights, but also in relation to the gender dimensions of social change and cultural struggles, including feminist struggles around sexuality and equity. Interestingly, although there was not much mainstream media coverage (due to major logistical problems) during and after the WSF 2007, many commentaries (blogs and newsletters,) recognized the space women and feminist politics now inhabits in the Forum. That being said, the WSF is not only a terrain of engagement, but also one of contestation between new and old structures of thought and action. The Feminist Dialogues (FDs), which begun in 2004 were created because the global women's rights The effort to secure equal rights for women and to remove gender discrimination from laws, institutions, and behavioral patterns. The women's rights movement began in the nineteenth century with the demand by some women reformers for the right to vote, known as suffrage, and agenda was not being taken on board by many others in the WSF. The FDs have been held in order to define and elaborate a transnational feminist agenda and also to understand the role of feminists in the larger social movements This is a partial list of social movements.

Crosscutting cross·cut·ting n. A technique used especially in filmmaking in which shots of two or more separate, usually concurrent scenes are interwoven. Also called intercutting. these themes are the politics that act as a mediator of lived social and cultural relations. It is interesting to note that whereas the first aim to deliberate on a transnational global agenda was some what questioned earlier, in Nairobi a decision was taken at the FD2007 for participating feminists to explore how to work together beyond the WSF space. As a result joint campaigns leading up to March 8 and beyond were agreed on with various themes. The success of the second more complex aim to integrate the feminist agenda into the WSF is less easy to judge. The struggle for women's rights and sexual diversity and abortion continues within the WSF, but many feminists noted with concern the large presence of Church groups, including one anti abortion booth at the WSF in Nairobi. Just how to continue to engage the broader global social movement in discussions and actions that understand gender relations as transversal and cross-cutting--starting with the body--within the many struggles of social justice movements is not so clear. The challenge continues to be how to make an analysis of body politics inherent in the social movements concerns with the feminization feminization /fem·i·ni·za·tion/ (fem?i-ni-za´shun) 1. the normal development of primary and secondary sex characters in females. 2. the induction or development of female secondary sex characters in the male. of labour for example, or how to engage the alternative movement in struggles to end fundamentalist ideology that goes beyond the religious sphere and opens up spaces for oppressive and exclusionary practices that impact women's lives and bodies in multiple ways. Much has been learnt in these years by feminists about how to work transnationally, how to deal with tensions and differences and how to strategize strat·e·gize v. strat·e·gized, strat·e·giz·ing, strat·e·giz·es v.tr. To plan a strategy for (a business or financial venture, for example). v.intr. together in order to move complex and moving global agendas. It is critical that the transnational feminist movement continues to find its own space to analyze, strategize and build trust and thereby strengthen resolves in what promises to be an increasingly complex world. There is also the need for much more thought and strategy on how feminists move from this ideological and linguistically diverse 'epistemological community' to form alliances with other social movements and if it is important and necessary to at strategic moments bring others into feminists spaces to dialogue and debate intersections among different the movements' agendas. Transnational feminists are clearly aware of this need, as they fight within the hegemonic democratic frameworks to overcome systems of exclusion of women from the public/ political space. While retaining autonomy, feminists need to negotiate alliances on a number of critical issues ranging from hard macroeconomic mac·ro·ec·o·nom·ics n. The FD engagement in the WSF in Nairobi signalled some important steps in these directions. Mlle Wendy Hercourt, Presidente, Women in Development Europe (WIDE) |
