National are two insurers from different sectors with different business strategies but similar challenges. Right now, Lincoln National is reaping the rewards of its refocused business plan. State Farm, however, is trying to regain lost market share by cutting auto rates. Both companies are on this year's lists of top property/casualty and life/health insurers by net premiums written. State Farm retained the top spot on the property/casualty list (page 28), and Lincoln National dropped one spot to No.24 on the life/health list (page 32). State Farm and Lincoln National are big players in the industry, and their performance in 2000 was somewhat representative of how their sectors performed. The key difference between these companies is that they appear--on the surface, at least--to be moving in opposite directions. Lincoln National in recent years has remade re·made v.
