Innosoft International Announces New Line of Enterprise Directory Solutions at EMA '98.

Innosoft International Inc. announced this week at the EMA '98 Annual Conference and Exhibition that it has launched an entirely new line of enterprise directory solutions based on Internet standards. The announcement follows Innosoft's recent acquisition of LDAP technology leader, Critical Angle Inc.

The flagship product, the Standalone LDAP Server, is an implementation of the Internet's Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) standard, versions 2 and 3. Other products include the LDAP Filtering Proxy for organizations wanting to control public access to their internal LDAP-based directories, and the LDAP-X.500 Enabler, which allows an LDAP-only directory server to be integrated into an X.500 environment.

Standalone LDAP Server

Innosoft's enterprise directory solution provides a standalone directory service using the LDAPv3 protocol for Solaris (both Sun SPARC and Intel x86), and Windows NT 4.0 systems. The Standalone LDAP Server 4.1 release includes support tools for database creation, consistency checking, and basic clients.

The LDAPv3 protocol is the latest update to the Internet directory standard, developed to address the limitations found during deployment of the previous LDAPv2 specification. Major enhancements of LDAPv3 are in the areas of referrals, security, support for Unicode characters, and extensibility.

LDAP Filtering Proxy and LDAP-X.500 Enabler

Innosoft's new LDAP Filtering Proxy is an LDAP-to-LDAP gateway server that is typically located on the organizational firewall, and is particularly useful in cases where the customer's business model calls for allowing outside access to its internal LDAP server. With security being a critical issue, the LDAP Filtering Proxy is the ideal solution for the enterprise wanting to provide -- but still maintain control of -- public access to their internal LDAP servers.

The highly configurable LDAP Filtering Proxy allows the systems administrator to determine the exact type of filtering that is needed. For example, the Proxy server can be configured to restrict the type of search requested by clients outside the organization, or filter out restricted attributes and entries from responses to the requests. Hence, the Proxy server can block undesirable accesses or "trawling" type searches by rewriting incoming search filters and search results to ensure sensitive information is not disclosed, as well as prevent a potential hacker from discovering the internal directory topology. It can even be configured to limit the number of incoming connections.

The new directory services product set will also include the LDAP-X.500 Enabler, providing organizations with the ability to interconnect X.500 and LDAP servers. This gives users seamless access to LDAP-only workgroup servers as part of their enterprisewide X.500 directory service. It supports both X.500 clients and servers, implementing the standard DAP and DSP protocols.

Mark Wahl -- previously the founder and president of Critical Angle Inc. -- was the principal designer and developer of Innosoft's new line of enterprise directory solutions. He co-authored the LDAPv3 specifications and chaired the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) LDAP Extensions (LDAPEXT) working group. He has seven years experience in the development of messaging, directory, and security technologies based on both Internet and X.500 standards.

Pricing and Availability

Pricing for the Standalone LDAP Server is based upon the number of directory entries held in the server's database, with license fees starting out at $1,800 for up to 1,000 entries. Prices for the LDAP Filtering Proxy are set at $4,800 for up to 15 concurrent connections; $12,000 for an unlimited number of connections. The LDAP-X.500 Enabler sells for $4,800. A 50 percent discount will apply on both the LDAP Filtering Proxy and the LDAP-X.500 Enabler if purchased together with the Standalone LDAP Server.

The LDAP-X.500 Enabler is currently shipping; the Standalone LDAP Server and the LDAP Filtering Proxy will begin production shipping next month. All three products will run on Solaris (both Sun SPARC and Intel x86) and Windows NT 4.0 systems, with the Standalone LDAP Server also available on Digital UNIX.
