failed to end a run of eight consecutive defeats against Manchester Magic Manchester Magic is an English basketball team from Manchester, Greater Manchester, competing in the English Basketball League, Division 1. They are owned by former NBA star John Amaechi and play their home games at the Amaechi Basketball Centre.  in their first game of the regular season.

The 62-99 result flattered the league leaders as Mohawks matched their opponents man-for-man in every department.

The Teessiders started without their captain Ike Attah, who has a torn Achilles and may not be back until late January.

Tony Doyley played through the pain barrier after picking up a dislocated dis·lo·cate

 injury against Leeds.

There was an electric start to the game and in the first quarter the lead changed hands eight times.

The teams mirrored their coaches. Mohawks' head coach Phil Douglas
Phillip Brooks Douglas (June 17, 1890 in Cedartown, Georgia - August 1, 1952) was an American baseball player.

Douglas originally signed with the Chicago White Sox in 1912, but soon landed with the Cincinnati Reds.
was animated and adrenaline-driven and his team battled for every free ball.

In contrast, Magic's coach Jeff Jones was calm and emotionless e·mo·tion·less

as his well-drilled team passed accurately and built their attacks slowly.

Mohawks' new boy Steve Leven led from the front but found himself warming the bench for the rest of the first half after picking up three quick fouls as Magic edged themselves in front at the end of the session 23-19.

The Teessiders again took the fight to the visitors with Doyley filling the void left by Leven, battling hard against a physically stronger and taller Magic side.

McCotter (20 points), McLaughlin and Colmer played superb cameos for the Hawks but one of the smallest players on the court Stephan Gill (26 points) blew the Teessiders away in a mesmerizing mes·mer·ize

     passage of play.

He out-scored, out-jumped and left his markers standing as Magic closed the half out 49-31 up.

The third quarter was a more even affair as Coach Douglas reintroduced Leven back to the game and Mohawks looked the stronger side chasing the game.

Both teams stiffened up the defences as the session ended 15-14 to Magic.

The final quarter was a disjointed affair with no real pattern of consistent play.

Mohawks lacked penetration in attack as Manchester picked them off on the break going on a 14-point run with scores from Brandon Kimbrough, Watts and Gill.

Leven rattled in 14 of Mohawks' final session total of 17.
