Injection molding.

This year's show will be the place to kick the tires on large two-platen machines. At least five suppliers will exhibit machines over 1000 tons.

If you're a molder who needs to fit a really big machine in a limited space, this year's show is the right place to start shopping. At least six vendors will have large, two-platen machines on display, some of which are being seen publicly for the first time. Also look for new machines for the full spectrum of specialty markets - including ones for PET preforms (see sidebar), thin-wall molding, high-speed packaging, new "digital video disks," and thermosets thermosets, materials that can not be softened on heating. In thermosetting polymers, the polymer chains are joined (or cross-linked) by intermolecular bonding. Thermosets are usually supplied as partially polymerized or as monomer-polymer mixtures. .

You'll also have the opportunity to view in person recently introduced machines (previously reported in this magazine) for multi-component molding, liquid silicone rubber, and low-pressure molding. For new developments in hot runners and other tooling, see this month's "Tooling Up" column.

LITTLE BIG MACHINES

It looks like large two-platen machines (1000-plus tons), which typically take up 20% less room than their three-platen counterparts, will be all the rage General Public's All the Rage was released in 1984 by I.R.S. Records. Track listing
  1. "Hot You're Cool"
  2. "Tenderness"
  3. "Anxious"
  4. "Never You Done That"
  5. "Burning Bright"
  6. "As a Matter of Fact"
  7. "Are You Leading Me On?"
  8. "Day-to-Day"
at this year's show. Aside from saving precious real estate, these two-platen machines may require less energy to run because they push far less oil around when building damp force.

One of the debuts in this category is the Vista Maxima two-platen machine from Cincinnati Milacron of Batavia, Ohio. A 1760-ton version will be at the show, though the Maxima line will eventually extend up to 4000 tons. Milacron's hydromechanical damp design doesn't use tie-rod cylinders to build clamp pressure; instead it builds tonnage with a direct-acting, short-stroke "pancake" cylinder mounted in the stationary platen behind the die plate. Once the moving platen locks onto the tiebars, the ram and die plate travel up to 1.37 in. to build pressure. The central location of the ram is intended to prevent platen deflection. A single hydraulic cylinder drives the nut locks that fix the moving platens to the tiebars. Milacron is claiming fast cycles for the machines: 30 in./sec clamp speed, 0.5 sec to build pressure, and dry-cycle times of 8 sec.

Beyond its unique clamp design, the Maxima illustrates the kind of savings common to two-platen machines. Its footprint measures 449 x 151 x 116 in. This 1760-tonner uses just 500 gal of oil, less than half of what a conventional hydraulic machine would use. Other features include, walk-up access to the nozzle and an open base to ease parts removal, tie-rods that can be pulled from either direction, and a CAMAC (Computer Automated Measurement And Control) An IEEE standard (IEEE 583) for modular instrumentation systems. CAMAC "crates" are control stations that contain plug-in cards with ports to data acquisition devices.  486 closed-loop controller.

Another brand-new two-platen machine is the Caliber Series from Van Dorn Demag, Strongsville, Ohio. A 1760-ton version will be shown. Designed jointly by Van Dorn and Mannesmann Demag, this new line features retractable re·tract

tiebars and will be displayed with an optional servo-electric screw drive to speed recovery times.

Husky Injection Molding Systems, Bolton, Ont., will show a 1000-ton, two-platen Moduline E Series machine. Husky's design features a clamp with some "flex" to ward off platen deformation problems. The machine will be shown with an Automatic Part Tracking robot that uses a timing belt and new programming software to allow the robot to "chase" the moving platen and strip the part while the mold is still opening, shaving seconds off cycle time.

Krauss-Maffei Corp., Florence, Ky., will show several two-platen machines, among them the largest one it has exhibited in North America. This 1000-ton model achieves cycle-time reduction through parallel clamp movements. At the show the machine will produce a beverage-can tray in a four-cavity tool with cycle-time target of 26 sec. The company will also roll out a recent extension of its "C Line" of two-platen machines - a 350-ton "clean-room" press with an isolated clamp.

Engel Machinery Inc., York, Pa., will show a 2000-ton, two-platen Duo machine. And HPM HPM High Power Microwave

MIGHTY MITES

Moving to the opposite end of the size scale, A.B. Jewelry Machinery of Montreal, Que., will introduce its AB-200-4 Plastic Injector, a 2-ton machine weighing just 88 lb and having a 20 x 25 x 31 in. footprint. The machine holds molds up to 2.5 x 3 x 2 in. and has a 0.25-oz shot capacity. This is one of a series of manual and automatic models designed for medical, electronic, jewelry, and prototyping applications.

The smallest of the small at the show will be the new 0.14-oz Micro-Injector from Daca Instruments of Goleta, Calif.

RELATED ARTICLE: New Ways to Make PET Preforms

One of the more unusual machines scheduled to debut at the show is the "Index Machine" from Husky Injection Molding Systems, Bolton, Ont. To boost productivity, this 250-ton, two-platen machine uses a servo-driven moving platen that carries four core sets and rotates vertically. This permits simultaneous molding, cooling and ejection, for a significant productivity increase without need for a robot or cooling fixture. Husky hints that the cooling stations on this machine could be utilized for operations such as printing or stretch-blowing of bottles.

In other news, Dutch supplier Tooling Preform Systems B.V. will show a four-section, servo-driven takeout system for PET preforms and will introduce molds for coinjected multilayer preforms. Krupp Formaplast, Edison, N.J., a relative newcomer to the U.S. preform-molding market, will show a 96-cavity PET preform tool.
