Injecting enthusiasm and fun into clinical education: the passing of the Health Professionals Competency Act, created a need for individuals and organisations to source relevant clinical education.

The capital is Wellington; the largest city and leading port is Auckland.  Limited comes in. Medtra is a Wellington based company, established in 1999. It provides clinical education for registered nurses and allied health workers. The Directors have strong nursing backgrounds and a vast amount of clinical and educational experience. Consequently it was natural for them to respond to the need for clinical education by developing a variety of opportunities to support professional development and satisfy requirements of the competency based practicing certificate.

One-day seminars

Medtra programmes are currently available in Wellington, Auckland, but local deliveries are negotiable, and take the form of one-day seminars relevant to Surgical Nurses and Aged Care Nursing staff.

The programmes include:

Fluid Balance

Shock

Sepsis Sepsis Definition

Sepsis refers to a bacterial infection in the bloodstream or body tissues. This is a very broad term covering the presence of many types of microscopic disease-causing organisms.

Diabetes and nutrition

The aim is to provide a learning experience that is informative, gives an injection of enthusiasm for clinical practice, and is interactive, sharing, stimulates positive networking and is also FUN. Participant evaluations from both registered nurses and anaesthetic technicians who have attended one-day seminars provided by Medtra have been consistently positive and encouraging. Which means prospective participants can approach these courses with confidence.

A Postgraduate Qualification for Surgical Nurses

The programme is a fully integrated study experience, with theory informing clinical practice, and clinical practice informing theoretical knowledge gains. The content and assessments are designed around three consistent themes:

Clinical knowledge and skill

Research / Quality Assurance

Reflective clinical practice.

The title Perioperative adds a new dimension to the question "what's in a name". Some have incorrectly interpreted it as purely an Intraoperative programme, replacing what used to be called Theatre Courses. However this is very definitely not the case as this Postgraduate Certificate is relevant to all registered nurses working in the perioperative area of practice: i.e. Surgical Wards / Units, PACU, OT, Surgical HDU/ICU. Participants from all these areas have successfully taken part in the programme and have been very positive and encouraging in their feedback.
