:IFMX IFMX Informix Corporation ), the technology leader in enterprise database-powered solutions, today announced the release of its native Java(TM) JDBC (Java DataBase Connectivity) A programming interface that lets Java applications access a database via the SQL language. Since Java interpreters (Java Virtual Machines) are available for all major client platforms, this allows a platform-independent database (TM) driver, providing Informix(R) customers with a high-performance, enterprise development and deployment API for leveraging Informix's leading database technology in Java.

The new driver enables direct, high-performance connections to an Informix database from Java business applications with no need for additional client or server software. In addition to a newly launched online resource for Java software developers, the release of this driver reinforces Informix's commitment to Java technology support for enterprise development.

"Native JDBC is the latest key component in Informix's comprehensive strategy for universal integration and deployment of Java technology with Informix Dynamic Server(TM)," said Tim Child Tim Child born, 1946 is a British television producer. He is most famous for creating and producing the cult children's television program Knightmare, a fantasy role-playing adventure game which pioneered virtual studio or blue-screen prodution. , Informix's vice president of development for client APIs.

is native Java software, enabling direct connection to Informix databases for high-performance Java technology deployment, and is a confirmation of Informix's commitment to strong support for industry Java technology standards."

The Informix JDBC driver is a platform independent database connectivity product that is certified with all currently shipping or supported versions of the Informix Dynamic Server. Customers are using JDBC to connect Java applications to the database as part of larger Java-based solutions built on Informix.

"We are delighted to support Informix's announcement today of the availability of its Type 4 JDBC 1.22 driver," said Jon Kannegaard, vice president of the Java platform Running Java programs under the Java Virtual Machine (JVM). Java "platform" refers to the running of Java programs versus Java itself, which is a programming language. Java programs are machine independent and run intact on any hardware platform that has a Java interpreter (JVM).  at Sun Microsystems Sun Microsystems, Inc. "Informix's release of a JDBC driver, which is written entirely in Java technology, is good news. It means that a Java software-enabled desktop can dynamically open a business application written in Java technology and have a high-performance connection directly to an Informix database -- without having to load and maintain any special software on either the server or the client."

Concurrent with the release of the new JDBC driver, Informix is also launching their Java Developer Corner on the Informix Developers Network http://www.informix.com/idn/, an online technical resource, provided free of charge to developers.

The Java Developer Corner provides Informix Java software developers with current technical information about Informix Java technology products, an online newsgroup newsgroup

Internet forum for discussion of specific subjects. Newsgroups are organized into subjects (e.g., automobiles); each typically has several subgroups (e.g., classic cars, Formula One racing cars).
, and the ability to directly download products, including the new JDBC driver. The new JDBC is also available free of charge through standard Informix distribution.

"Informix's Type 4 JDBC driver has definitely enhanced developer productivity at Arch. We are using Informix JDBC to build an advanced, platform-independent system that will meet a wide variety of needs -- from product provisioning and fulfillment to customer care," said Dwayne Burberry, director of information systems at Arch Communications Group, Inc., the nation's third-largest paging company.

"The performance and reliability of the new driver will enable us to integrate dozens of legacy systems into a single Informix based system that is faster and easier to use and has national scope. This will allow us to deliver new and better services to our customers and business partners."

Informix's JDBC driver fully supports SQLJ (SQL Java) A programming interface that allows SQL statements to be expressed at a high level in a Java program. SQLJ statements are converted into JDBC commands. See JDBC.  Part 0, an evolving Java database query language (database) database query language - A language in which users of a database can (interactively) formulate requests and generate reports. The best known is SQL. . Informix has verified that the current test suite for SQLJ is fully compatible with the new JDBC driver. At this time, the final version of the SQLJ specification, reference implementation pre-processor and test suite are near completion.

When these are completed, Informix plans to enhance the pre-processor and distribute it with future versions of its JDBC driver.
