This combination of Java's flexibility, security and portability, and the Informix Java-anywhere strategy provides developers with a fast, platform-independent and easy solution for developing Intelligent Web applications.

"Informix's Java-anywhere strategy is an illustration of Informix's commitment to Java development," said Eric Schmidt, vice president and chief technology officer of Sun Microsystems Sun Microsystems, Inc. "Customers can enjoy the benefits of a low cost desktop like the JavaStation coupled with Informix's Universal Web Architecture to build this new breed of Intelligent Web applications."

Informix's Java-anywhere strategy allows developers to create application logic and content in Java and to execute it in the client layer, middle tier (1) Generally refers to the processing that takes place in an application server that sits between the user's machine and the database server. The middle tier server performs the business logic. See application server and client/server.  on an application server, or natively in the database engine for optimal application performance.

The Informix Java Environment is comprised of a Java API (Application Programming Interface) A language and message format used by an application program to communicate with the operating system or some other control program such as a database management system (DBMS) or communications protocol. , JDBC (Java DataBase Connectivity) A programming interface that lets Java applications access a database via the SQL language. Since Java interpreters (Java Virtual Machines) are available for all major client platforms, this allows a platform-independent database  support, INFORMIX-JWorks development tool, INFORMIX-Universal Web Connect, INFORMIX-Web DataBlade module and a Java in the Server feature of the INFORMIX-Universal Server. This environment is a key component of the Informix Universal Web Architecture, which includes database servers, tools, INFORMIX-Universal Web Connect open platform, partners and programs allowing customers to build transaction-and-publishing-based Intelligent Web applications for the distributed enterprise.

Java API and JDBC

Informix is the only database vendor to offer a Java API that allows customers to access the database directly via Java from the client or middle-tier. Java on the Client

INFORMIX-JWorks tool, the only drag-and-drop Java development tool that allows developers to build Intelligent Web client/server applications for Informix's servers. The JWorks tool can be used with any Java-based Web development environment to easily create pure Java Refers to initiatives from Sun that specify 100% compliance with its Java specification. The goal is to maintain a consistent, single interface for Java so that all Java Virtual Machines can run all Java programs. See Holy Grail.  database forms automatically without actually writing code. Developers can also write Java with the Java API and JDBC.

Java in the Middle

INFORMIX-Universal Web Connect allows Java programmers to access and retrieve content stored and managed by an Informix database. With the Java API, JDBC and INFORMIX-Universal Web Connect, application developers can create business applications and logic in Java that can run in the middle tier on an application server.

Java in the Server
