Information to help you use this book.In addition to the member listings, the WorldBook offers information on all IABC services and products available -- where to find them, and how to use them. The purpose of this WorldBook is to help you make the most of your member services -- and get the most from your IABC dues! To find what you are looking for, first start with the table of contents on pages 4 and 5. IABC's association leaders, award winners, accredited members, and information on your member services are listed (and arranged) alphabetically. If you don't find what you're seeking in the contents, go to the comprehensive cross index at the back of this book. And if you still can't find it, call world headquarters offices at (415) 433-3400 or fax (415) 362-8762. We've made a sincere effort to verify listings in this special WorldBook edition of Communication World. However, we assume no liability for error or omission. Please inform us of inaccuracies. Also, services, fees and prices mentioned in the member services section were accurate at press time, but may change during the year. IABC's accreditation program measures your abilities and skills at a critical stage of career growth -- as you move from craft levels into communication management levels. A rigorous testing program identifies and recognizes the well-rounded communicator through written and oral examinations and a portfolio evaluation. "ABC" after your name is a mark of professional achievement and commitment. It demonstrates to fellow communicators, to employers, and, most important, to yourself, that you have attained the skill levels needed. For more information on the accreditation program, call Rae Hamlin, ABC, (415) 433-3400, ext. 113, or fax (415) 362-8762. Accredited Business Communicators A. The annual international Gold Quill Awards program honors top work in the field, promotes the highest professional standards, and recognizes outstanding solutions to communication and other management problems. Categories in the competition range from communication programs to audiovisuals, from writing to annual reports. The deadline for entering the next Gold Quill Awards program is January 27, 1993, for work produced for use in the previous year. The Call for Entries brochure is mailed in the fall of each year. For a list of the 1992 winners, please contact Cheryl Carter at IABC World Headquarters, (415) 433-3400, ext. 104. Month of Excellence IABC sponsors the "Month of Excellence," a program conducted in November in conjunction with the Gold Quill Awards competition. During the Month of Excellence, winners of the previous Gold Quill Awards, and other top communication professionals, are available to speak to chapters and meetings on planning and techniques that were successful in entering and winning a Gold Quill Award. This service is available at no cost to chapters. For information, call Cheryl Carter, (415) 433-3400, ext. 104. The Fellow Award The Fellow Award is the highest honor IABC bestows upon a member. The award is given to recognize those IABC members who have continually made an outstanding contribution to the communication profession through exemplary achievement within their own organization through unselfish service to IABC members. Chairman's Award The Chairman's Award is given to IABC members who have given of their time and talents and have diligently worked behind the scenes for IABC at the international level over a period of at least years. Generally, this will be a contribution that largely has gone unrecognized. Service on the executive board or in any other IABC leadership position will not rule out a candidate for the award, but such service in and of itself will not be a consideration since this service is recognized in other ways. The Code is reviewed and revised as necessary by the ethics committee and the executive board. Any IABC member who wishes advice and guidance regarding its interpretation and/or application may write or phone IABC headquarters. Communication professionals will uphold the credibility and dignity of their profession by encouraging the practice of honest, candid and timely communication. The highest standards of professionalism will be upheld in all communication. Communicators should encourage frequent communication and message that are honest in their content, candid, accurate and appropriate to the needs of the organization and its audiences. 2. Professional communicators will not use any information that has been generated or appropriately acquired by a business for another business without permission. Communication professionals will abide by the spirit and letter of all laws and regulations governing their professional activities. All international, national and local laws and regulations must be observed, with particular attention to those pertaining to communication, such as copyright law. Industry and organizational regulations also will be observed. 4. Communication professionals will not condone any illegal or unethical act related to their professional activity, their organization and its business or the public environment in which it operates. It is the personal responsibility of professional communicators to act honestly, fairly and with integrity at all times in all professional activities. Looking the other way while others act illegally tacitly condones such acts whether or not the communicator has committed them.
