Information technology division expands services for members.


The AICPA AICPA

See American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA).
 information technology division, the newest of the Institute's technical membership divisions, offers a range of services that should offset the division's $100 annual dues, whether the member is in public practice, industry, education or government.

Publications

The division distributes five types of publications, each aimed at satisfying a different member need.

* Infotech Update, the division's quarterly newsletter, gives members practical advice on applying recent technological developments in their practices or other places of employment.

* Technology alerts are onepage A onepage is a short, one-page document, sometimes in outline form, which gives a brief overview of a topic. Onepages are made to get information across in a brief, yet concise manner.  advisories on newsworthy news·wor·thy

 technological topics. Technology alerts recently have been released on computer viruses and telephone fraud. While the timing of technology alerts depends on news developments, the division hopes to publish at least four each year.

* Technology bulletins are 8- to 10-page updates on existing information technologies that are either being enhanced or used more extensively. The division intends to publish at least two technology bulletins per year.

* Practice aids are detailed reports 20 to 50 pages in length showing existing technologies can be applied to CPA (Computer Press Association, Landing, NJ) An earlier membership organization founded in 1983 that promoted excellence in computer journalism. Its annual awards honored outstanding examples in print, broadcast and electronic media. The CPA disbanded in 2000.  practices. The division, which issued the Practice aid CPA Firm Technology Planning Guide in 1992, intends to issue at least one aid per year. The CPA Firm Technology Planing Guide (product no. 038510JA) is available to those who are not division members at $10 per copy from the AICPA order department at 1-800-TO-AICPA.

* Research reports are detailed 10- to 30-page reports on emerging technologies. They are announced in Infotech Update and are available to division member on request without charge. The division, which issued the research report Audit and Security Issues With Expert Systems in 1992, intends to issue one such report per year.

Discount programs In addition to the publications, the division distributes a list of discount offerings available exclusively to its members four times each year. In the February February: see month.  mailing, the discounts included a $100 savings on a CD-ROM CD-ROM: see compact disc.

 conference, as well as an invitation to a reception for division members attending that conference. The next AICPA microcomputer conference will be held June 13-16 in Boston.
