Information Mapping, Inc.'s Newest Workshop Helps Authors Gain Benefits of DITA - Fast!

The Information Mapping A method for communicating information in a structured manner. Developed by Robert E. Horn while at Harvard and Columbia Universities, it provides a standard approach for analyzing, organizing and visually presenting information based on the needs of the target audience. [R] method allows complex content to be easily accessed, understood, managed, and revised, and also allows content to be single-sourced and tagged using DITA

), the leading provider of information life cycle solutions, gives authors the skills to quickly get started producing DITA content in its newest workshop, Developing Effective DITA Content.[TM]

The two-day workshop will be launched in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area.  on February 27-28 at IMI Headquarters, Waltham, Massachusetts One of the early centers of the Industrial Revolution in northern America, Waltham is a city in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 59,226 at the 2000 census. .

Darwin Information Typing Architecture The Darwin Information Typing Architecture (DITA) is an XML-based architecture for authoring, producing, and delivering technical information.

The name of the architecture can be explained as follows:
Darwin
(DITA) is an XML-based open source standard architecture for authoring, producing, and delivering topic-oriented content. Organizations around the world, such as IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries) , are implementing DITA to improve the effectiveness of single source publishing Writing documentation and information in one format and publishing it in multiple formats. For example, the source text could be written in a word processor and converted to a variety of different formats such as PDF, HTML and XML.  or to publish to multiple media. Conceived by IBM, the extensible DITA architecture is now managed by a technical committee at OASIS, the open standards Specifications for hardware and software that are developed by a standards organization or a consortium involved in supporting a standard. Available to the public for developing compliant products, open standards imply "open systems;" that an existing component in a system can be replaced  consortium.

Switching to topic-oriented, or modular, writing required by DITA can be a daunting daunt
tr.v. daunt·ed, daunt·ing, daunts
To abate the courage of; discourage. See Synonyms at dismay.

[Middle English daunten, from Old French danter, from Latin
challenge for many since new skills are needed. However, Doug Gorman, IMI's president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board. , notes that "DITA and Information Mapping share many of the same concepts. DITA, like Information Mapping, emphasizes writing in modular, reusable topics and classifying topics by information type. By learning the Information Mapping method for analyzing, organizing, and presenting information, authors can quickly develop high-quality, user-focused, reusable DITA content."

In order to effectively implement DITA, Gorman suggests

* allowing most contributing authors to implement DITA at a very high level

* focusing the technical staff on specialization, if specialization is a must, and

* continuing to write with Microsoft[R] Word using IMI's Content Mapper[TM] software rather than adopting complex, hard-to-use XML editors An XML editor is a markup language editor with added functionality to facilitate the editing of XML. This could be done in plain text in a text editor, with all the code visible. .

Participants will use Content Mapper for authoring during the workshop.

The workshop is ideal for anyone writing and editing

* technical documentation

* quality system and compliance content and documentation

* operating procedures and users guides

* training materials and courseware, and

* customer services documentation and online help.

Workshop participants will receive

* a Participant's Guide with in-depth review of all principles and concepts covered in the workshop, and

* a 90-day license for Content Mapper software.

The Information Mapping method, developed 40 years ago and used by organizations worldwide, allows content to be organized into modular, flexible units that are user-focused, accessible, and easy to update. Organizations using the method report a 20%-50% decrease in documentation costs and a 38% increase in documentation use.

The launch workshop, which is being offered at a discount, will include a special feedback session and discussion on how the workshop fits with the needs and requirements of the participant organizations' DITA initiatives. To enroll in this workshop launch or to obtain more information
