''We will target multinational companies who want to build a private domestic network using Magellan switches and integrate it with Infonet's international public services,'' said Nortel's Klaus Buechner, group vice-president and general manager, Multimedia Networks. ''Prime candidates are companies who want the flexibility to rapidly expand global access as their dynamic business needs dictate, while minimizing their capital outlay capital outlay See capital expenditure. and avoiding further implementation delays.'' Buechner explained that the interconnect (1) To attach one device to another. That is because Infonet is also deploying Magellan Passport 160 switches on its core backbone network A backbone network provides a path for the exchange of information between different LANs or subnetworks.[1] A backbone can tie together diverse networks in the same building, in different buildings in a campus environment, or over wide areas. . Infonet President Jose Collazo pointed out that this relationship with Nortel is unique in the sense that it's the first time Infonet has aligned so closely with a major equipment provider to win new business opportunities for its World Network services. The worldwide sales forces of Nortel and Infonet will make joint calls, as appropriate, to capture a greater share of the global marketplace. In some cases, a customer may want to buy or lease Magellan switches from Nortel to build a private, domestic voice and data network it will own and operate. The same client may require international data communication services as well. Nortel and Infonet could then join forces to provide a seamless interconnect between the customer's new private network and the global Public or Virtual Private Data Network services on Infonet's World Network. Thereafter, Infonet will serve as the customer's single point of accountability for managing those services, end-to-end, 24-hours a day, seven days a week, including providing local in-country support. In other instances, a customer may buy or lease Magellan switches from Infonet. Infonet and Nortel could then team up to also arrange for implementation of both the customer's private network and public World Network services and to handle ongoing network management, maintenance and local in-country support for the entire hybrid solution. ''If customers want to deploy a private network in international locations, we will also offer to house their Magellan switches in our existing World Network communication facilities,'' said Collazo. He considers the arrangement with Nortel a substantial boon Boon A general term that refers to a benefit or improvement for investors.
